Let me get this straight. Senator, you want to legalize people who enter our sovereign nation illegally, ignore our immigration laws, steal our identities and lie to employers? People who draw from our public services, get free health care and education, all paid for by you and me and American taxpayers? And, if I’m reading this right, many if not most, of our illegal visitors fail to pay taxes while sending huge sums of money back to their homeland.
Excuse me, am I the only one that sees something wrong with this? Isn’t it apparent that this deal is one-sided, and not in the best interest of the United States?
As I travel across this nation as the spokesman for The American Legion, people tell me they are frustrated, upset and concerned that little or no attention in this national debate has been given to national security implications. Some say that more Americans are being killed in the United States by illegal aliens than are dying on the battlefields in Iraq.
Sometimes they remind me that 30 percent of our federal prison population is illegal aliens and more than half of them have committed multiple crimes. The sad reality is that most of them will be released on our streets to commit more crimes; crimes against we, the American taxpayers, who are unknowingly funding their very existence in this country.
Yes, I know. I’ve heard the arguments. They are just hardworking men and women who come to this country to better themselves and to feed their families. But at what cost to the United States? Can we say with complete assurance that this is all they want?
Millions of illegal undocumented people in this country are a security time bomb and the clock is ticking. It is imperative that we, as a nation, put our national security up front, priority number one, when considering an immigration reform plan. The bill being considered in the U.S. Senate does not do that and leaves this nation vulnerable to acts of terrorism.
Local and state law enforcement agencies that do not report violations of immigration laws to federal authorities are gambling with our safety. Similarly, cities and municipalities with sanctuary policies for illegals are aiding and abetting. They are putting our nation at risk and recent history has proved that.
Mohammed Atta, one of the 9-11 terrorists, was stopped several times for traffic violations but his immigration status was not checked. If it had been, almost 3,000 people who perished that day might be alive today.
Earlier this month, Dritan Duka, Dljivir Duka and Shain Duka were arrested and charged with plotting to attack military bases and slaughter American service men and women. They might have been successful if it were not for an observant store clerk who reported their suspicious behavior.
Authorities had many opportunities to end this conspiracy but they did not check their immigration status. The Dukas were stopped 75 times for traffic citations and other violations between December 1997 and May 2006. Since they lived in a “sanctuary city,” law enforcement officials missed 75 opportunities to uncover the conspiracy and protect American lives. Instead, it was the observant store clerk who saved the day.
The American people have reason to be upset with our government because it is not doing its job. It’s time to put Americans first by dealing with illegals as uninvited visitors to our sovereign soil. Illegal aliens are trespassing and they are threats to our security. Let us pray that our elected representatives will come to that realization sooner rather than later.

We appreciate the efforts of the American Legion. Thank you for standing up when others run away. Thank you for defending America without hesitation whether abroad or at home.

I just visited my Rep and Senators and gave them the same arguments Paul has so aptly stated. I let all of them know that should they support current proposed legislation I would work tirelessly to make sure they never again have the opportunity to sell out everything Vets have sacrificed to preserve. We all need to be adamant that the forfeiture of our future stops now.

I served for 27 years put myself in harms way so my country can sell me out? I think it is very irresponsible of our elected officials to even consider this plan. What next? Make true American's give up thier homes to give these underprivlidged places to live?

The US Senate must deny amnesty to illegals by stopping this immigration bill. Fail to do so and you'll see what happens in the 2008 elections.

Good morning members of the American Legion. I have competed in the Dept. of Florida State Oratorical Contest for the past four years, and participated in Florida BoysState. What we all have to understand is that this "problem" is nothing new, and our nation's reaction to the "problem" is nothing new either. Looking back in our history reveals the phobia native-born Americans felt at the large arrival of incoming immigrants. It happened in the 1840's with the Irish, in the 1880's with the Chinese, in the 1900's with the Japanese, and in the 1910's and 1920's with the Italians. Now in the 2000's, its the Hispanics.
Granted, these people have committed a federal crime, that fact is not denied, but do we, as a country, really know why these people are willing to sacrifices their lives to reach our country? They do not cross our borders illegally to break our laws, or to drain our welfare system (besides how can they if they have no documentation?). They come because the social, economic, and political situation in their native countries is desperate, and they see no other option but to come here. Of course, the most assured way to come to the States is through the legal process. That point is also understood. However, in order to come to the United States legally, one must not only pay the fees that come with the process, but one must also prove that they have a job waiting for them in the U.S., and have a source of income. Of course, these poor farmers do not have the means, or the time, to wait five years for an obvious denial. They have families to feed. Thus, they cross, not because they want to break the law, but because they need to make sure there is a chicken on the pot for the family each day. I stress that we look back at our history, and by doing so, we come to understand our roots, that indeed our ancestors crossed treacherous obstacles to reach this land, without permission from their home government and/or without permission of the Native Americans, but most importantly, out of necessity. Of course, we need to protect our borders, that is defintely understood and wanted as a country. Thus, through the passage of the current bill in Congress, we can protect our country (although I heard nothing of protecting our northern border with Canada) and know who exactly is in this country. I don't know about you, but I rather be chasing terrorists than farm laborers and maids wanting to feed their children. Thank you all for your time.

Your comparing apples to oranges, Danny. Entirely different situations in those time frames.
Posted by Joe | 05/23/07 1:26 PM |
Danny,
Your final sentence says it all -- "I'd rather be chasing terrorists." This bill would make it much more difficult to do so. Three of the "Fort Dix Six" were illegal. 9/11 leader Mohammad Ata was illegal and stopped a number of times by well-meaning but helpless law enforcement officers who did not have strong anti-illegal immigration measures in place to deport him on the spot. If you were a terrorist, wouldn't you just laugh at the United States inability to protect its borders? Also, the comparisons to those of us concerned about this issue to racists of a century ago is a straw man.
Posted by Jack | 05/23/07 3:35 PM |
Ok, they were illegal, but if I am not mistaken they crossed through Canada and not Mexico. Its funny how we all want border security. I want it to, but we do not mention Canada. Maybe we forget our northern neighbors.
About the racism, I never intended to call any member of the American Legion racists. If my words came out like that I apologize. All I am doing is reflecting back on our history, and sorry to say, it is not oranges and apples. The same worries were there, we just had different names for the new immigrants. I'm glad we got the terrorists at Fort Dix. I believe that it is better for our country to know who are the 12-20 million illegals in order to know who is good and who is bad. Besides what are we going to do, ship all these people that we do not know where they are out? That would be truly un-American to do so.
What I want to do here is to provide a different prospective on the issue with a sincere and honest discussion free from distortions. I am open to all opinions and viewpoints.

Dear Members,
Why is our President so willing to surrender our own Nation to criminals, but unbending in his policy in Iraq? Is it corporate greed? This simple question has NOT been asked by anyone in the government run media. Why?

America was built by legal immigrants, and the current tidal wave of illegal immigration is completely different.
America must control its borders.
The proposed bill would reward illegal behavior and encourage more illegal aliens in the future.

Everyone has great passion and resolve for this topic, but I would like to inject a scenario that you may have not considered. A new country, one comprised of the US, Canada and Mexico called the North American Union. This new country would require a new Constitution and a new Bill of Rights. The framework for this new country is already beginning to take shape. The genesis of this idea can be found in the document entitled, "Building a North American Community." Authored by a group called Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) with input from the Canadian Council of Chief Executives and the Consejo Mexicano de Asuntos Internacionales.
So what is the plan? Erase the borders. A meeting took place in March of this year where the leaders of the three countries discussed a plan called Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America (SPP) President Bush described the significance of the SPP as putting forward a common commitment "to markets and democracy, freedom and trade, and mutual prosperity and security."
Task Force proposes the creation by 2010 of a North American community to enhance security, prosperity, and opportunity. In a joint statement in 2005 the three leaders said "our security and prosperity are mutually dependent and complementary." Its boundaries will be defined by a common external tariff and an outer security perimeter within which the movement of people, products, and capital will be legal, orderly and safe.
The first question I asked myself was, "how would this be possible if we are fencing the border and taking immigration to Congress for reform?" The answer becomes as plain as the nose on my face when I read in the CFR report.
The three governments should commit themselves to the long-term goal of dramatically diminishing the need for the current intensity of the governments' physical control of cross-border traffic, travel, and trade within North America. A long-term goal for a North American border action plan should be joint screening of travelers from third countries at their first point of entry into North America and the elimination of most controls over the temporary movement of these travelers within North America.
President Bush has no intension of keeping the National Guard posted on our borders. This is a temporary move in order to bolster support of his base. We know this because the entire agenda outlined in these documents is to dissolve the borders and what do you think caused the President to offer a "Guest Worker" program? Allowing several million illegal aliens the right to create products, provide labor and access to government benefits like health care. He has to do this to keep the other leaders confident he will proceed with the bigger picture.
Building a North American Community

I am in agreement with Jim's statement. This bill would reward illegal behavior. Right in my community, illegals are taking construction jobs, from unionized workers! I say this is an amnesty bill, that no American, wants!

Legal immigrants? When did the pilgrims ask the Native Americans to settle on their land with the intention to steal it in the future? Just look back into our history. Please, all I am asking all of you is to look back into our history and analyze it without bias. It is true, the pilgrims never asked the Native Americans to settle here. I'm pretty sure that if they knew they were going to get wiped out by the newcomers they wouldn't have celebrated Thanksgiving with them. It is a black eye in our history, but we must accept it.
Why are we comparing these hard-working people to criminals? Simply because they crossed our border of necessity? (I explain the necessity part above) The overwhelming majority of them come here to work, and they have never been convicted of any crimes in their lives. Unfortunately, we focus on the one or two percent of those illegal immigrants that come to cause harm to our country. First-degree murderers, serial rapists, arsonists...those are criminals. Decent people who are poor yet willing to work and respect the rights of others, and who crossed our border to feed their family...what so criminal about that?

Looking back at my American History textbook, there is not one mention that the Pilgrims asked the Native Americans to stay in their lands. Furthermore, if the Natives knew that they were going to be slaughtered by the Europeans, I'm pretty sure they would have not celebrated Thanksgiving with the Pilgrims. America was never built by legal immigrants. It was simply built by immigrants.

The immigrant issue is NOT AN ISSUE OF RACISM. That is a "RED FLAG" that is often raised by those who do not oppose illegal immigration.
As a son of someone who emigrated here legally, I have no sympathy for ANYONE who came here illegally. However, we also MUST PUNSIH ANY COMPANY OR CORPORATION WHO KNOWLINGLY HIRES ILLEGALS. I don't mean just by fines, by by hard jail time for management of those lawbreakers. If we don't do that, than any other aspect of attempts to curtail illegal immigration becomes a farce.

Throughout it's history America has always had bigoted, xenophobic residents. They can and have found an excuse to discriminate against damn near anyone.
If you're black,Hispanic,Jewish,
polish,Irish,Russian,Italian,German,
Japanese,Chinese,Korean,African, south American,or any other nationality, color, sex, religion, size, manner of dressing, education, etc. than themselves then they make every effort to exclude you. This is especially true of the bible thumping, right wing, so called Christians who could in no way possible have ever been created in the image of a good and loving God.
This is the 21st century folks, the Hispanic immigrants will bring a breath of fresh air, sorely needed after the putrid odor of decay and death permeating the atmosphere for the last 6 1/2 years.
They are hard workers, honest, patriotic, loyal, have taken great risks to come here and better themselves and their families, what could be more American ?
As far as the criminal act of violating our borders, that pales in comparison to the criminal, and genocidal war in Iraq, the raping, robbing, and plundering of Americans and America by the disgustingly unpatriotic oil, drug, defense, insurance, credit card, and TV Evangelism criminal industries, among countless others.
We need them to progress as the bush has said, and we also need them to pay the Social Security taxes that will support us old people and make the burden lighter on our children and grandchildren. In addition we need them to be able to compete globally, especially against the Japanese,Koreans, and Chinese who will own us if we keep doing the same things. There is nothing better than 30 million new American consumers and hard, intelligent, risk taking, adaptable, true Christian workers.

I address this to Mr. David Kennedy: As tomorrow is Flag Day you may want to turn your flag upright with stars on the upper left. If this country is in distress it is due to the unchecked invasion of illegal immigrants not from your "why I hate America" list. Thankfully there are enough true Americans to keep this country from being sucked into your State of Anarchy.

I'd just like to say that the author is a moron !! I'm sure he's a decendant of the plague of europeans (of which he now denounces his patriarchy) that brought desease, criminality, corrupt political systems, environmental decline and most of all the ill mentality from Europe. This country is now infected with this kind of fear based nonsense.
