Challenging The Slanderers

By Marty Conatser - The American Legion National Commander

When the term “betray” is used to describe any American general not named Benedict Arnold, it gets most people’s attention. When it is used in a New York Times advertisement to describe a brilliant wartime commander with the credentials of David A. Petraeus, it gets the 2.7 million member American Legion’s attention.

I met Gen. Petraeus when I visited Iraq earlier this summer. That I was impressed with this visionary officer is unsurprising and relatively unimportant. What is important is that the men and women serving under Gen. Petraeus believe in him. Their faith in the uniformed Princeton Ph.D. is not misplaced. Petraeus earned a reputation as a counterinsurgency genius early in the Iraq war when he commanded the 101st Airborne Division and basically rebuilt the government infrastructures in Mosul and Ninevah Provinces. As he mentioned in his congressional testimony, sectarian violence in Iraq is down - especially in the once wild Anbar Province. Local tribes are turning on al Qaeda and in many cases cooperating with the coalition. When one senator said Gen. Petraeus's firsthand report required "a willing suspension of disbelief," it seemed to this Midwesterner that it was Washington's way of calling him a liar.

Even so, the libelous attack on a general is not The American Legion’s primary concern about the anti-war movement. Our concern is for the private, the sergeant, the lieutenant and the major. If a distinguished general could be attacked in such a manner, what can the rank-and-file soldier expect when he or she returns home?

At our national convention last month in Reno, nearly 3,000 delegates unanimously passed Resolution 169, codifying The American Legion’s support for the global war on terror. The resolution recalls that Congress authorized the military action in both Iraq and Afghanistan and reminds Americans that you cannot separate the wars from the warriors. With nearly a million Vietnam veterans in our organization, the symbolism of such a resolution is striking. Never again should Americans be tarred as baby-killers, terrorists or criminals for risking their lives so others could be free.

With almost 170,000 American forces in Iraq, there will be some criminal acts from time-to-time. Find me a town anywhere in America with the same population and I promise you will find a higher crime rate than what is seen among our military. Where is the perspective when the headlines repeatedly remind us of those crimes, yet little is written about Army Reserve Capt. Joel Arends, who led a team in Baghdad through fire to rescue Iraqi civilians? And why are the convicted soldiers from Abu Ghraib more famous than Marine Cpl. Jason Dunham, who sacrificed his life smothering a grenade so that others would live?

As Americans, we all have a duty to speak up when our uniformed heroes are slandered. When a major media outlet accepts advertising revenue to mass produce such slander, we should be outraged. MoveOn.org can write anything it wants to, but the New York Times is not required to publish such libel.

Earlier this year, a presidential candidate called the Global War on terrorism a “bumper sticker.” I can think of 3,000 dead Americans who probably would disagree. “Support the troops,” however, really is a mere bumper sticker if we allow our fellow Americans, the media and our elected leaders to slander their heroism.

Commander Conatser is spot on. Hoo-ah!

"Our concern is for the private, the sergeant, the lieutenant and the major. If a distinguished general could be attacked in such a manner, what can the rank-and-file soldier expect when he or she returns home?"

Where are you when Max Cleland, John kerry and John Murtha are slandered and insulted? Is this the same legion that launched operation Turncoat against members of Congress? Better yet where were you when John Boehner said our dead in Iraq was a "small price," to pay. SMALL????

Excellent/ To be called a liar before he even opened his mouth to speak is an insult, not only to General Petraeus, but to all members of the Armed Forces not only those pressently serving, but us veterans as well.

It was easy to see that General Petraeus was the most intelligent person in the "congress eat the General" meeting.

Really? With his record? Did anyone actually read the Move On ad? This is more of the same; we are still stuck at stay the course. Where is support for the troops? Where is we need more troops and the troops deserve to be cared for? Guess you "vets" forgot that?

Preamble to the Constitution of The American Legion

For God and Country
We associate ourselves together for the following purposes:

To uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America; to maintain law and order; to foster and perpetuate a one hundred percent Americanism; to preserve the
memories and incidents of our associations in the Great Wars; to inculcate a sense of individual obligation to the community, state and nation; to combat the autocracy of both the classes and the masses; to make right the master of might; to promote peace and
goodwill on earth; to safeguard and transmit to posterity the principles of justice, freedom and democracy; to consecrate and sanctify our comradeship by our devotion to mutual helpfulness.

The Constitution of the United States of America

Preamle
We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general
welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and
establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

Bill of Rights

Amendment I (1791)

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of
grievances

For the record. The MoveOn.org ad in the New York Times uses the form of the word betray twice in the ad. “General Petraeus or General Betray Us?” is the heading of the ad and the last line of the ad is “Today before Congress and the American people, General Petraeus is likely to become General Betray Us.”

With consistency, the form of the word ‘libel’ is used twice in the article written by The American Legion National Commander.

Now the point of this posting. Libel? Libelous? Commander Conatser might
consider the troops are abroad fighting to defend The Constitution of the United States of America while at home he is voicing his opinion to deny the freedom of speech and free enterprise of others. He might also consider the first purpose of The American Legion is to defend the Constitution of the United States of
America.

The attention of some of 2.7 million members of The American Legion was not
obtained by the MoveOn.org ad but by his article posted on The American Legion website. I find it appalling that he feels it is so important to stop name calling at home and mentions no relief to the bullets and bombs they face abroad. Commander Consatser should look beyond the MoveOn.org ad and respect the concerns and support being given to the troops by others. There are two
constitutions he is supposed to be defending. Which part of either or both do you feel is not important?

tim..
There is a section of the United States Constitution that comes in between the Preamble and the Amendments that you mentioned. They are the "Articles of our Constitution". One of the most important one of these "Articles" is Article III Section 3.

Our Founders knew the importance of punishing those who give aid and comfort to our enemy.

If you believe that our enemy hasn't received "aid and comfort" from reading the NYT ad, slandering the General who is fighting them, I am afraid that you have your head in the sand.

Every time that the Islamic fascist read or hear of how the United States is in the wrong, and that we should not be fighting them, it is aiding their cause, and is giving them comfort!

I ask you, what part of the following Article of the United States Constitution "do you not understand"?
******************
United States Constitution
Article III
Section 3. Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying war against them, or in adhering to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort. No person shall be convicted of treason unless on the testimony of two witnesses to the same overt act, or on confession in open court.

The Congress shall have power to declare the punishment of treason, but no attainder of treason shall work corruption of blood, or forfeiture except during the life of the person attainted.

Mike, if by aid and comfort to the enemy you mean giving guns, plans, troop movements then you are correct. If you are saying that dissent or pointing out that elected officials bending the truth to get a desiered outcome and them having citizens call them on it then you are wrong. In the ad by that group they are pointing out simply that the administration did not tell the truth to us lowly citizens and in that regard the good General being the underling of the Commander in Chief have committed a betryal of our values of truth justice and the American way. The words of the General were perfectly matched to what the Prez has been saying over and over himself.
In the end if you lie to the people they have a right, not a privledge, to kick your ass. Remember 1776 when the King tried to shove his will down our throats? Same deal. Terrorist will always be around. I have no confidence in this administration protecting us with their policies. Taking away freedoms does not make you more free. No matter how much you pay a PR firm. After all 9-11 happened on their watch or are we still blaming someone else. Reality stinks!
Let's get off this kick and start thinking about the fact that we don't have enough troops to protect the homeland and keep all these dallyances going at the same time. Let's go to the vipers pit and snuff out the Saudi wahabis and do it in Saudi Arabia where they live , train and are educated. Oh I forgot we need the oil . If you are looking for treason you might look there. Good luck Mike.

I don't know if Gen. Petraeus will be one of our great generals or not. I do know he deserves better than to have betray used in any way to discribe him he has served his country with honor and commands respect for that. If it was not for those that serve moveon would not have the freedon to print an ad like that. Moveon should be held in contempt by all in America.

Johnny, thank you for your response. If I gave the impression that I approve of the way that this Administration is handling the war, I apologize.

The war did not start on 9/11, and even though it happened on this "Administration's watch", we must give credit where it is due.

The dates of these statements clearly point at the previous administration for allowing the attack on our country to be planed.

"As for their accusations of terrorizing the innocent, the children, and the women, these are in the category of 'accusing others with their own affliction in order to fool the masses.' The evidence overwhelmingly shows America and Israel killing the weaker men, women and children in the Muslim world and elsewhere. A few examples of this are seen in the recent Qana massacre in Lebanon, and the death of more than 600,000 Iraqi children because of the shortage of food and medicine which resulted from the boycotts and sanctions against the Muslim Iraqi people, also their withholding of arms from the Muslims of Bosnia-Herzegovina leaving them prey to the Christian Serbians who massacred and raped in a manner not seen in contemporary history. Not to forget the dropping of the H-bombs on cities with their entire populations of children, elderly, and women, on purpose, and in a premeditated manner as was the case with Hiroshima and Nagasaki."

We saw the brutality of the Russians bombing Mujaheddins' positions, by grace of God, we dug a good number of huge tunnels and built in them some storage places and in some others we built a hospital. So our experience in this jihad was great, by the grace of God, praise and glory be to Him, and the most of what we benefited from was that the myth of the superpower was destroyed not only in my mind but also in the minds of all Muslims. Slumber and fatigue vanished and so was the terror which the U.S. would use in its media by attributing itself superpower status or which the Soviet Union used by attributing itself as a superpower."

The "treason" that I mentioned in my message has nothing to do with guns or other weapons (but you know that). It is the treason that is most clearly pointed out, and that is "AID and COMFORT, which is something that organizations like MOVEON.ORG has been doing since George Soros (a devout socialist, and America hater) started the organization.

Does the American support the Military Commissions Act?

Dear Mike - I'm quite confident that Hitler would support your argument against free speech, but Petraeus allowed himself to be used by the administration, the report was written by the White House - this is general knowledge, so when asking the question will he betray us? The answer is a forgone conclusion. He has sold out to Bush & Co. As for your suggestion that Moveon's speech is treasonous the logic is better placed that you are treasonous for suggesting the US Constitution somehow be subordinated to an oblique argument regarding opinion that does no co-incide with your own. I hope the Legion members will visit votevets.org and see what vets that still remember what the constitution is about think - because right now this org looks, smells and acts fascist.

Wake up legion vets you are being led by nose rings down the wrong path - by a leader who has an agenda that puts your sons and daughters in harms way the likes of which did not occur even in Viet Nam. At least then you could do your tour and go home. No such luck for todays soldiers on there 6th visit because the coward in chief will not declare a draft or withdrawal.

This is just more psuedo-patrriotic blather. Instead of immediatly lickig bush's boots, read the news. bush is currently in front of the Dupreme Court selling out the country. bush is not only a criminal but also a traitor. The only reason he got this far is support from psuedo -patriots. Better than 70 percent of the US public is against the war, Conatser does not speak for me. I pray he finds the courage to wake up
