The Samsung American Legion Scholarship is available for high school juniors who participate in the current session of American Legion Boys State or Auxiliary Girls State and are direct descendants (or legally adopted children) of wartime veterans eligible for American Legion membership. The Combined Americanism Conference focuses on sharing ideas, best practices, program updates, and it allows department program directors an opportunity to provide needed feedback to our national programs. 

Programs include: Legion Baseball, Boys State, Oratorical, Junior Shooting Sports, department chaplains, Children & Youth department chairman and Scouting department chairman.

On the first day of every month, Legion Family members are encouraged to wear a Be the One item to show their commitment to reducing the stigma around mental health issues among veterans and servicemembers. Aug. 4 is the birthday of the Coast Guard, founded in 1790 with congressional authorization to build the first set of vessels aimed to help combat smuggling and enforce tariffs and taxes. Here are some things you might not know about the service branch that operates under the Department of Homeland Security.

Awarded annually to the department which has rendered the most outstanding support during the period August 1 – July 31 to the program of Boy Scouts of America. The award is based on the number of troops organized, strength of existing troops and general welfare of the Scout movement under Legion sponsorship within the department based on written reports with substantiating evidence submitted to National Headquarters 15 days prior to the National Convention.

Aug. 7-10, Legion Baseball tournaments

Eight American Legion Baseball regional teams will go on to compete in the Legion World Series in Shelby, N.C. 

On this day, American Legion Family members and Americans remember and honor the men and women who were wounded while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces.

The American Legion awards between $22,000 and $25,000 in scholarships to deserving baseball players each year. Each Department Baseball Committee may select a player from its department to receive this scholarship. Download the Legion Baseball scholarship form. Any team manager or head coach of an American Legion post–affiliated team may nominate a player for consideration of this award.

Japan's surrender, which marked the end of World War II, technically came on Aug. 15, 1945. But due to the time difference, which spans the international date line, word came to the United States on Aug. 14. Thus, that day (today) is celebrated as V-J Day.

The 97th American Legion World Series will be Aug. 15-20 in Shelby, N.C., where eight teams will compete for the championship title. The ALWS is played annually at Veterans Field at Keeter Stadium in Shelby, N.C., the permanent home of the series since 2011.

The 2024 American Legion Legacy Run will be held Aug. 18-22. During this event, more than 300 American Legion Riders and others trek over 1,000 miles to raise money for the American Legion Veterans and Children Fund. Learn how to participate in the Legacy Run.

The 105th National Convention is Aug. 23-29, in New Orleans, La. National convention attendees participate in commission meetings, workshops and training sessions, as well as hear from distinguished guests, see award presentations and elect a new national commander.
