In February 1971 at Fort Knox, Ky., we had an inspection from a major who came to our billets, and better than 60 percent of my basic training cohort was made up of men from Lima, Ohio. I remember he asked the guy two from me where he was from and the reply was "Lima, Ohio, sir." Again the response was repeated with the guy next to me. Finally he came to me and asked the same question, for which he received the same reply he'd heard from the last few guys. He turned to the drill instructor and asked, "What have you got - a whole company of Lima, Ohio?" The drill sergeant just shrugged his shoulders.
The inspection went to Building 4 and the major asked the first person there where he was from. Again he got the same reply.
"Anyone from Lima, Ohio, drop and give me 20," he said.
I think he quit asking after that where we were from.
