The American Legion Eagle Scout of the Year winner will receive a $10,000 scholarship. Three runner-up scholarship awards will be granted in the amount of $2,500 each. For more information, click here. 

On the first day of every month, Legion Family members are encouraged to wear a Be the One item to show their commitment to reducing the stigma around mental health issues among veterans and servicemembers. And to start a conversation about what Be the One is and how to save the life of a veteran. Legion posts should also promote Be the One on the first day of every month. Visit legion.org/betheone. 

Download the Buddy Check Toolkit to help you connect with Legionnaires and veterans in your community. As a way to reach out to members and former members who may need help, the National Executive Committee passed Resolution 18 during Spring Meetings in May 2019. The resolution calls for Buddy Checks to be conducted Legion-wide on the weeks of The American Legion’s birthday, March 15, and Veterans Day.

The American Legion’s Big Twelve Competition recognizes departments that meet or exceed their pledged membership goal percentage by the March 90% target date. The department in each category that has pledged the highest percentage and meets this goal receives the award. The percentage does not include members gained through DMS.

The winner in each category will be reimbursed for computer equipment purchases of up to $2,000. Runners-up in each category will be reimbursed for computer equipment purchases of up to $1,000.

On this day 105 years ago, members of the American Expeditionary Force convened in Paris for the first American Legion caucus.

Military veterans in and around far west Arizona are invited for a special service session with The American Legion on March 22 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 516 S. Hopi Avenue, Parker, AZ 85344.

State American Legion leadership along with local members of The American Legion will discuss veteran benefits, membership and community service. A veteran service officer will also be available to help with claims or other veteran-related questions.

March 25 was established by Congress as National Medal of Honor Day to “foster public appreciation and recognition of Medal of Honor recipients.” There are 3,511 recipients who have received the Medal of Honor since the Civil War. Listen to Medal of Honor stories conducted by The American Legion.

American Legion members are invited to a detailed briefing on Medicare Advantage Plans for the Training Tuesday on March 26 at 7 p.m. Eastern. Register for the training. The session will discuss the advantages of enrolling in these plans alongside existing VA healthcare benefits, covering key aspects such as eligibility, The American Legion partnership with WellCare, and an overview of Medicare Parts A, B, C and D.

March 29 is designated as National Vietnam War Veterans Day. This is a time to pay special tribute to the 9 million Americans who served during the Vietnam War era, to the 58,000 names memorialized on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., and to those who never received the recognition they deserved when they returned to America from war.

Race to the Top competition is divided into five categories based on the membership of the district without regard to geographic locations. District commanders will compete in each of the following categories based on final membership year totals, and a top district commander for the national award will be selected from each of the five categories. Post ribbons will also be awarded to each top district commander for all posts in those districts. Second and third place awards will also be presented in each category.
