Military, veteran job fair to take home plate in nation’s capital

The American Legion, the U.S. chamber of Commerce and Major League Baseball’s Washington Nationals will host a job fair Aug. 9 at Nationals Park.

The free event, one of the many nationwide hiring expos in the Hiring our Heroes series, will feature network opportunities and workshops tailored to fit the unique needs of veteran job seekers, servicemembers and their families.

Potential applicants will hit the mound and commence the day’s activities at 8 a.m. with a workshop led by workforce professionals that will cover a wide range of topics, including résumé building, networking best practices, and tips to translate military skills into equivalent civilian experience. Career coaches also will be on hand to mentor participants and afford them opportunities to knock their elevator pitches and mock interviews out of the park.

A hiring fair will take place immediately following the workshop from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Employers, including Lockheed Martin, Dog Tag Bakery and Washington Metro Area Transit Authority, will engage prospective job seekers during networking opportunities and on the spot interviews.

Registration is not required; however, registering for the event will allow attendees to upload their résumés to be viewed by employers ahead of time. All registered veterans, servicemembers and spouses are eligible to receive up to two free tickets to attend that evening's game between the Nationals and the Cleveland Indians.
