I Am The American Legion - Sean Davis

The day after 9/11, Sean Davis joined the Oregon National Guard. Like thousands of other soldiers, he deployed to Iraq, where in 2004 he suffered injuries during an ambush that took the life of his best friend. Davis received a Purple Heart along with some emotional scars.

To heal, Davis turned to art. He has written a novel and several plays that have been performed in and around Portland. He’s turned his creativity into therapy for himself and other veterans. Under his leadership, Post 134 has hosted literary readings. Post members have also participated in Davis’ plays, which in turn have helped grow membership.

“When I came back, I was having a really difficult time figuring out my role in life,” Davis says. “(Writing) wasn’t the cure, but it was a way to live with something. I think art is an amazing way to heal the soul.”
