My dad joined the Navy in 1937 and was in Pearl Harbor on USS Selfridge when it was attacked. He survived that and went on to serve 20 years, including a year at sea during the Korean War. All told, he was at sea for 18 of his 20 years. A photo of him in the engine room was taken by Life magazine's Carl Mydans, so he had a few moments of fame! Regretfully, he died at 63. With him being out to sea for most of my formative years and me enlisting in the Air Force at 18, I didn't have the opportunities to ask him all the questions I can now think of.
