Albert Maier

Albert (Al) Maier, 90, Bismarck, N.D., formerly of Ashley, N.D., died peacefully Aug. 27, 2015, in Bismarck..
Al was born April 16, 1925, in Ashley, the son of Jakob F. and Lydia (Nitschke) Maier. He grew up in Ashley, and graduated from Ashley High School. He then served in the U.S. Army during World War II; 15 months in the United States and 14 months overseas on the Philippine Island of Luzon with the 93rd Field Hospital.
On June 8, 1947, Al married Tillie Retzer in Ashley, where they raised two children (Steve and Carol). For 10 years Al was in the auto & implement business and then served as the postmaster in Ashley for 28 years, retiring in 1985. During this time he served as the president of the Ashley Lions Club, commander and member of The American Legion, and member and president of the Zion Lutheran Church Council. Tillie died on February 13, 1985.
On Aug. 2, 1986, Al married Verna (Fraase) Olson in Bellevue, Wash. They made Ashley their home until September 1994 when they moved to Bismarck. They joined the Faith Lutheran church and enjoyed many years of traveling. Al joined the Eagles and Am Vets and was a life member of the VFW Club in Bismarck. Verna died on April 9, 2010.
Al’s favorite pastimes were bowling, golfing, playing pool, playing cards, walking, traveling and dancing (especially with Katie). And he loved spending time with his many friends. He is survived by one son, Steven (Marcie) Maier, Jamestown, N.D.; one daughter, Carol (Ken) Schauer, Littleton, Colo.; one sister-in-law, Carol Maier, Hopkins, Minn.; four stepdaughters; one stepson; four grandchildren (Natasha, Brook, Patrick, Elisa); two great-grandchildren; and many special friends.
Al was preceded in death by his parents, first wife Tillie, second wife Verna, one sister, Ida, and one brother, Erv.
