Bernard “Barney” Caul, devoted husband, father and grandfather, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Sept. 20, 2017.
Barney is survived by Clara, his loving wife of 66 years, as well as his children, Phyllis Bottini (David), Susan Saigusa (Rajan) and Martin Caul, and granddaughters Julie and Kimberly Saigusa. He is also survived by his brother, William Caul, as well as by many nieces and nephews.
Barney was born on Sept. 27, 1928, to P.J. and Josephine Caul in Ambridge, Pa. He joined the Navy after high school and was stationed at Moffett Field, Calif., where he met Clara Ann Heath of Sunnyvale on a blind date. They married on June 18, 1951, and moved to San Diego, where he was stationed as a naval electronics technician. He loved to tell stories of his time in Navy transport, where he gave rides to Bob Hope and Gov. Pat Brown, whose eyeglasses he repaired. After leaving the Navy, Barney and Clara came to Redwood City, Calif., where he joined the police department in 1952. Starting as a patrolman, he became a detective in check investigations and retired as a sergeant in 1980. He won many medals in law enforcement shooting competitions. Besides being a well-respected police officer, he held many other jobs throughout his life, including newspaper delivery boy, soda jerk, theater usher, hardware store clerk, school bus driver, gas station attendant and auto repairman, and security guard. After their retirement, they enjoyed living in many different places, including Truckee, Maui, Lake Havasu and Shingletown, finally settling in Citrus Heights, Calif.
He was known in the family as” MacGyver” as he could fix anything. His honesty and sense of humor were legendary. Barney was a faithful SF Giants and 49ers fan and never missed a game He was an avid golfer and also enjoyed his boat while living in Maui. He was known by many different names: “Red” for his beautiful red hair, Bernie, Barney, P.J., Sarge and Brub. But most of all as Dad and Grandpa.
