Frank Gass
Born 6/8/17, died 7/7/18 at the age of 101.
He served in WWII, inducted June 25, 1941, and was WIA on March 30, 1945, on Negros Island P.E.
He was in the following battles and campaigns: Bismarck Archipelago, Guadalcanal and Luzon.
He was honorably discharged on October 21, 1945.
He served as a squad leader, was a staff sergeant, Company C 185th Infantry, and noted to be an expert rifleman and infantryman.
He received the following decorations and citations:
Purple Heart, American Defense Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with bronze star, Combat Infantryman Badge, Good Conduct Medal and Asiatic Pacific bronze service star.
He was proud to have served his country and frequently shared stories about some of the experiences he had.
After discharge he returned to his home in St. Louis, and married his wife Mary "Marie" Scherting on February 13, 1954.
He had 3 children: Michael, Frank and Lisa.
He had 3 grandchildren: Nathan, Joshua and Stephanie.
He had 1 great-grandchild: Benjamin.
He lived his whole married life in the house he and his brothers had built.
He worked at the same place for 55 years - Crunden and Martin Manufacturing Company, where he served as a foreman. The day he retired the mayor of St. Louis declared it Frank Gass Day.
After he retired he and his wife would babysit all 3 grandchildren from birth until they started school.
He loved watching baseball and was a huge Cardinals fan.
At the age of 85 he was taking care of his wife who was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. He was determined to keep her at home with him and did so until she passed away in 2008.
After she passed away he was determined to live to be 100, and survived her another 10 years.
He was a great man, family man, father, father-in-law, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, godfather and friend to all.
I am proud to say he was my dad.
