Veterans in INDYCAR: Jason Wurtzel

Throughout the 2023 INDYCAR season we’re highlighting veterans who work within the racing series, whether for Chip Ganassi Racing, INDYCAR or other racing teams.

This week we’re highlighting Jason Wurtzel, the tire specialist and truckee for Christian Lundgaard’s No. 45 Vivid Clear Rx Honda with Rahal Letterman Lanigan (RLL) Racing and a U.S. Navy veteran, who “grew up everywhere” as the son of a U.S. Air Force retiree. Wurtzel spoke with American Legion Social Media Manager Steven B. Brooks about being a part of a team owned by former CART Series champion driver Bobby Rahal, television icon David Letterman and entrepreneur Mike Lanigan; how military translates to being a part of a racing team and watching his driver win his first INDYCAR race.

Steven Brooks: How did you get into INDYCAR?

Jason Wurtzel: I spent a long time in NHRA drag racing. I just wanted a change of pace, and I worked for Graham (Rahal’s) father-in-law. I texted Graham and said, “Hey, what do you got?” And he said, “Come over on Monday and talk to (RLL Team Manager Rico Nault).” And the next thing I know I’m working on an INDYCAR.

Question: What’s that experience been like, working for a recognized team, a team that puts competitors out there and wins races?

Wurtzel: It’s been incredible. I mean, Bobby and Mike and Dave and Rico and (crew chief Derek Davidson) and everyone, they care more about the individuals, the members of our team, than anything else. They go the extra mile to take care of employees. It’s a family over here.

Question: Is there anything you took from your Navy experience that you apply in your day-to-day life, whether it’s personal or working for RLL?

Wurtzel: We’ve got a couple other (veterans on the team) … who are real good friends of mine. We try and sell this all the time. This is the best transitional job for a veteran or for someone separating from the military. It’s the team aspect of our sport. I can’t put it into words, really. It’s a great structure. The time you spend with your teammates and everything else, you become a family. It’s really cool.

Question: What was it like last weekend watching Christian win his first career INDYCAR SERIES race (in the Honda Indy Toronto) and being a part of RLL’s first win of the season?

Wurtzel: It was huge for me. I’ve been a part of this car since its inception. I was a mechanic on Graham’s car, and when this car came about I joined it. And I’ve been a part of Christian since we tested him as a rookie. Actually, before we tested him as a rookie back in 2020, I believe. At Barber Motorsports Parks I believe is where we tested him out. (The win) was huge. I cried like a baby.
