Wisconsin governor recalls Boys Nation experience

Long before he became the 45th governor of Wisconsin, Scott Walker was one of nearly 100 rising high school seniors chosen to represent his state as a senator at American Legion Boys Nation.

Walker, whose family settled in Delevan, Wis., when he was 10 years old, attended Badger Boys State in the summer of 1985 and was selected to journey to the nation's capitol as part of the 39th session of Boys Nation. He'd go on to wind his way through Wisconsin politics, serving as a county executive, state assemblyman and ultimately as the state's highest ranking executive official.

Walker entered Boys Nation with an eye toward business or finance, but left with an entirely different perspective on his professional goals and life in general. He recently recalled his memories from the summer of 1985 and discussed the impact that Boys State and Boys Nation had on him in an interview with The American Legion.
