With cuts, hiring freezes looming, fewer federal recruiters appear at Legion/RecruitMilitary career fair; law-enforcement agencies, colleges and universities, and financial institutions well represented.

An employee of the Census Bureau didn’t have an exact count, but, in her expert opinion, “a whole bunch” of job seekers attended The American Legion’s Washington Conference career fair Feb. 21. By any reckoning, the hiring event, co-sponsored by RecruitMilitary, was a success if a bit different in its look.

Nearly 50 recruiters from the public and private sectors made hiring pitches to about 500 veterans, reservists and Guard members looking for employment. In the past, government agencies and departments comprised a significant portion of employers present at veterans job fairs. Now, with some government hiring freezes in effect and the massive cost cutting of sequestration looming, the number of federal recruiters is dwindling signficantly. But, as mentioned, the U.S. Census Bureau was at the fair (“we are a disciplined agency looking for disciplined employees”), as was the U.S. State Department and the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office.

Institutions of higher learning, law enforcement agencies, financial institutions and high-tech companies were, as always, well represented.

During the past year alone, the Legion has hosted or participated in about 200 career fairs for veterans, servicemembers and their families nationwide.
