American Legion stands side-by-side with Gold Star families

At least 13 American servicemembers were killed in Thursday's terrorist attach at Kabul airport, while more than 2,300 have been killed in Afghanistan since the war on terror began shortly after the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

"Every single one of those troops who made the ultimate sacrifice is a hero," American Legion National Commander James "Bill" Oxford said in a statement. "We stand side-by-side with Gold Star Families, Gold Star mothers and all family members who lost a loved one."

The American Legion has been a longtime supporter of Gold Star families, including the support of a memorial honoring them

"We will continue to support Gold Star Families and never let the memories of their loved ones fade into history," Oxford said. "Today, we still recognize the significant contributions of those who served in Vietnam and other war era but never returned home. We will also forever remember those who gave their lives in Afghanistan so Americans could live in freedom."
