A month of appreciation

A month of appreciation

The month of May is filled with honor and remembrance as we commemorate V-E Day, Poppy Day and Memorial Day. It’s also a month of gratitude for our military veterans with Armed Forces Day and Military Spouse Appreciation Day. Therefore, May is designated as Military Appreciation Month. The designation is meant to remind Americans of the important role the U.S. Armed Forces have played in the history and development of our country.

In honor of Military Appreciation Month, we’re asking you to share with us your appreciation for those who either serve or have served. We’re looking for personal connections.

Via Facebook, Stacey Marie shared with us who she appreciates. “My grandfather, SFC George Bartholomew (pictured above), veteran of the Korean War, 1951, Infantry. Was a lifetime member of The American Legion, the post commander three times, and was a longtime member of the honor guard in South Haven, Mich. His service influenced me to join the military and also The American Legion. I am very proud of him and he was a great comrade to all.”

Via Twitter, @chris30542 wrote to us, “I appreciate all our #military men and women past and present. My special connection to them is my ability to live here safely and freely because of their service to our country. And for that they’re always #WhoIAppreciate way beyond.”

You can submit your appreciation story via www.legiontown.org or share on Facebook and Twitter using the hashtag #WhoIAppreciate. We ask that you provide:
1. Name of veteran;
2. When and where they serve/served; and
3. Why you appreciate him or her and their service.

If you have a photo of that person, please share it. During the month of May these stories will be shared on  legion.org and on the National Headquarters social media channels.

Even though this month is filled with deals and discounts for veterans and active-duty servicemembers, let’s use personal words to show our appreciation for the brave men and women who fought, and continue to fight, for our freedom.
