I Am America and I Remember

I am America.
I will never forget;
I still hear your cries;
I still know your pain;
And I will not forget.

I am America.
I birthed you, grew you, and called you;
You went willingly, obeying the call;
Obeying the terrible call to live or die;
And I will not forget.

I am America.
I was there when some of you died;
I was there when some of you returned home;
I know your fears, your spirit, and your long sadness;
And I will not forget.

I am America.
You are my sons and daughters;
You are the ones who keep me free;
You are the ones who gave your all;
And I will not forget.

I am America.
I pray, calling on the God of the universe;
Naming you my suffering children;
God bless me and my children;
I cannot forget.
