Legion Baseball regionals: Day 4 recap

The American Legion Baseball #RoadtoShelby ends Sunday and Saturday’s contests helped shape the scenarios for the final day of regional tournament play.

Here is a recap of the day’s events and a schedule of Sunday’s contests.

Region 1 – Northeast – Shrewsbury, Mass.

Game 14: Shrewsbury (Mass.) vs. Stamford (Conn.)

Game 15: Winner of game 14 vs. Braintree (Mass.)

Braintree squandered an opportunity to reach the final unbeaten, falling 13-0 to Stamford, but will get a bye to a winner-take-all Game 15. Braintree will await the winner of Sunday’s first game, as Stamford will get a chance at revenge against the hosts, Shrewsbury after Shrewsbury slipped past Maine, 3-2. Shrewsbury topped Stamford, 4-2, on Thursday.

Region 2 – Mid-Atlantic – Purcellville, Va.

Game 14: Ephrata (Pa.) vs. Leesburg (Va.)

Game 15: Winner of Game 14 vs. New Jersey

Play resumed with Game 11 as New Jersey battled with Ephrata with the team from the Garden State edging out a 10-7 win, sending Ephrata to Game 12 against Albemarle (Va.). Ephrata stayed alive with an emphatic 13-2 victory. Closing the day, New Jersey returned to the field, this time against Leesburg. After a two-run rally to tie the game in the top of the ninth, Leesburg walked off in front of their home fans with a 4-3 win. 

Region 3 – Southeast – Asheboro, N.C.

Game 14: Randolph County (N.C.) vs. Florida

Game 15: (if Florida wins Game 14) Randolph County (N.C.) vs. Florida

Chase Webb and Jaxon Snider combined for a five-hit shutout as Randolph County stayed undefeated with a thrilling duel, 1-0, over South Carolina. The host team will have up to two chances to reach the American Legion World Series in its home state, facing Florida. Florida stayed alive with a 10-7 win over Wilmington and will need two more wins against teams from the host state to reach Shelby.

Region 4- Mid-South – New Orleans

Game 13: Leplace (La.) vs. Oklahoma

Game 14: Winner of Game 13 vs. Arkansas

Game 15 (if necessary): Oklahoma vs. Arkansas or Leplace 

Rain was once again the story in the Mid-South, as they were only able to play one of the two games before this happened. In that one game, Arkansas took care of Tennessee, 5-2, to earn a spot in Game 14 needing two wins to advance to Shelby. Arkansas will play the winner of the game between Oklahoma and Leplace, which will take place in the morning. Should Oklahoma win, Arkansas will need to beat Oklahoma twice to win the region. Should Leplace win, Leplace and Arkansas will compete in Game 14 for the right to play Oklahoma in a winner-take-all Game 15.

Region 5 – Great Lakes – Napoleon, Ohio

Game 14: Indiana vs. Danville (Ill.)

Game 15: Winner of Game 14 vs. Michigan 

Indiana opened the day with a 6-1 victory over Edwardsville (Ill.) to stay alive and will face the other Illinois-based team, Danville, in Game 14. Danville took care of previously unbeaten Michigan, 8-4, in the nightcap. Michigan will get the bye and advance to Game 15, which will send one team through to Shelby.

Region 6 – Central Plains – Dickinson, N.D.

Game 14: Creighton Prep (Neb.) vs. Iowa

Game 15: (if Iowa wins Game 14): Creighton Prep (Neb.) vs. Iowa

Three straight two-out hits in the 11th inning kept Iowa alive with a walk-off win over Fargo (N.D.), 6-5. Iowa will need to win two straight against an unbeaten Creighton Prep squad on Sunday to advance to Shelby. Creighton Prep braved a rain delay, then dispatched of South Dakota, 13-7 in the afternoon contest.

Region 7 – Northwest - Missoula, Mont.

Game 14: Washington vs. Idaho

Game 15: Winner of Game 14 vs. Missoula (Mont.)

Two contests headlined the slate in Missoula on Saturday, each determined by one run. In the first game of the day, Washington trailed, 4-1, heading into the bottom of the eighth. Washington scored two in the eighth and two more in the ninth to walk off as victors, 5-4. The nightcap was even more wild, with Idaho rallying to force extras, then taking a lead in the 11th. After Missoula tied it up in the bottom of the frame, Idaho managed to keep its season alive by working out of a bases loaded, one out situation. Idaho advanced to Sunday with another run in the top of the 15th. As the winner of Game 11, Missoula gets a bye to Game 15

Region 8 – Western – Denver

Game 14: Nevada vs. Utah

Game 15: (if Utah wins Game 14) Nevada vs. Utah

Utah and California started the day off with an offensive outburst with runs crossing the plate in each of the first six half-innings. Utah took a 12-5 lead into the bottom of the sixth, but California scored six in the sixth and one more in the seventh to equalize. Utah plated two runs in the top of the ninth to retake the lead on an inside the park home run, but California tied the contest up in the bottom of the frame and had the bases loaded, but couldn’t finish off the contest. After three straight scoreless innings, Utah finally broke through and scored four in the top of the 13th to stay alive. In the second game of the night, Nevada rebounded from a tough top of the first to win, 9-5, to stay unbeaten. Utah needs to win twice to advance, while Nevada has two chances to head to Shelby.​
