2021 American Legion Baseball regionals: Day 1 roundup

Thirty of the first 32 games are complete after the first day of the 2021 American Legion Baseball playoff regionals, and eliminations will begin today in the double-elimination tournament.

Here is a recap of the eight regionals through day one:

 

Region 1 - Northeast at Shrewsbury, Mass.

Joseph Reitebach yielded two hits and two walks in six shutout innings for Hamburg, N.Y., in its 5-1 win over Newport, R.I.

Windsor Locks, Conn., scored five times in the fifth inning to ensure a 6-0 win over Portsmouth, N.H. Reliever Nick Gomes pitched three innings for the win and also had a three-run double in the five-run fifth inning.

Beverly, Mass., broke open a scoreless game after three innings with three runs in the fourth and fifth innings, two in the sixth and four in the seventh for a 12-0 win over Bangor, Maine. Starter and winner Brayden Clark and reliever Brennan Frost combined on a one-hitter and Tyler Petrosino's three hits led the 15-hit Beverly offense.

And host Shrewsbury scored in four of its five innings to close out Essex Junction, Vt., 10-0 in five innings. Zachary Amero and Mason Bates had three hits apiece to lead an 11-hit Shrewsbury offense.

 

Region 2 - Mid-Atlantic at Asheboro, N.C.

Harrisburg Paxton, Pa., knocked off 2018 ALWS champion Wilmington, Del., 2-1 in the opener.

Cole Tarleton's one-out, two-run walkoff home run lifted Ridge St. Mary's, Md., past Norchester, Pa., 3-2, in a game Norchester led 2-0 after 4 1-2 innings.

Fuquay-Varina banged out 15 hits with five players collecting two hits apiece and three pitchers (Jacob Coffin, Nolan Connaughton and Chris Gruskin) combined on a four-hitter in a 4-1 win over Chesapeake, Va.

And host Randolph County, N.C., trailed 3-1 after four innings before scoring seven times in the fifth on its way to a 9-3 win over Allentown, N.J. Harris Jackson, Parker LaPlant and Tanner Marsh had three hits apiece to lead Randolph's 11-hit offense.

 

Region 3 - Southeast at Pelham, Ala.

Tallahassee, Fla., opened the Southeast Regional with a 6-2 win over Columbia, Tenn. Tupelo, Miss., edged Florence, S.C., 7-6. Troy, Ala., shut out New Orleans, 5-0. And Covington, Ga., defeated host Shelby County, 4-3.

 

Region 4 - Mid-South at Hastings, Neb.

Oak Grove, Mo., opened the Mid-South Regional with a 9-4 win over Pittsburg, Kansas. Dubuque County, Iowa, knocked off Grand Junction, Col., 7-3. Hogan Ralston was the winner and Kyler Cammack had three hits and two RBIs for Cabot, Ark., in its 7-2 win over Gretna, Neb. And host Hastings, Neb., shut out Washington, Mo., 3-0.

 

Region 5 - Great Lakes at Morgantown, W.Va.

Danny Witbeck went six innings and Al Money, Logan McCoy, Griffin Clarke and Derek Beougher had two hits apiece as Midland Berryhill, Mich., beat Barrington, Ill., 7-1.

Starter and winner Cohl Proctor and reliever Braxton French combined on a five-hitter and French, Brock Brubaker and Ethan Gibson had two hits apiece for Owensboro, Ky., in a 6-3 win over Rock Island, Ill.

Rockport, Ind., scored eight runs in the top of the seventh inning, four on unearned runs, to rally past Bridgeport, W. Va., 11-10. Jackson Raaf had four hits and three RBIs to lead Rockport's eight-hit offense.

And host Morgantown, W.Va., pitcher Reed Bailey had a no-hitter through 4 2-3 innings with a 3-0 lead over Harrison, Ohio, when inclement weather forced a suspension until 8:15 a.m. Thursday morning.

 

Region 6 - Central Plains at Sioux Falls, S.D.

Casey Clemenson threw a four-hitter and Lance Oster had two hits for West Fargo, N.D., in its 6-4 win over Osseo, Minn.

Starter and winner Kobe Senn and reliever Jacob Jaroszewski combined on a four-hitter and Senn helped himself with two hits as Fargo, N.D., edged Hopkins, Minn., 1-0.

And Renner, S.D., scored three late runs to snap a 1-all tie after five innings to knock off DePere, Wis. Renner starter and winner Austin Henry had 12 strikeouts in 5 2-3 innings.

Host Sioux Falls, S.D., had a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the third against La Crosse, Wis., when a rain delay suspended play until Thursday morning. Nate Sprenkle’s three-run home run and Jackson Boe’s RBI double in the top of the third put Sioux Falls on the board.

 

Region 7 - Northwest at Gillette, Wyo.

Starter and winner Caden Herbst yielded two earned runs in 5 2-3 innings and Derek Wolff and Adam Goodrich had two hits apiece for Yakima Valley, Wash., in an 8-5 win over the Billings, Mont., Royals.

Defending ALWS champion Idaho Falls, Idaho, trailed 1-0 after 4 1-2 innings before rallying to win 4-1 over Helena, Mont., as R.J. Woods had three hits and reliever and winner Dayton Robinson went 3 1-3 innings and yielded one unearned run.

Colter McAnelly had two hits and picked up the win with 2 1-3 innings of relief pitching as Cheyenne, Wyo., beat Eugene, Ore., 5-1.

And host Gillette, Wyo., defeated Eagle River, Alaska, 3-0 as Kaden Race threw a three-hitter.

 

Region 8 - Western at Fairfield, Calif.

Honolulu overcame a 1-0 deficit after 2 1-2 innings to down Herriman, Utah 3-1 as Charles Winchester and Blaze Keoki Wong combined on a three-hitter.

Rio Grande, N.M., got a seven-hitter from starter Eduardo Cardenas and relievers Isaiah Gutierrez and Richard Sanchez in a 6-1 win over Boulder Creek, Ariz.

Evan Johnson and Lucas Schaefer had three hits apiece as Petaluma, Cal., topped League City, Tex., 10-4.

And 2017 ALWS champion Henderson, Nev. scored four runs in the top of the fourth inning and seven runs in the fifth to defeat host Fairfield, Calif., 11-0 in five innings.
