2021 American Legion Baseball regionals: Day 2 roundup

Sixteen of the 64 American Legion Baseball regional participants saw their seasons come to an end Thursday in the double-elimination tournament.

Here is a recap of the eight regionals through day two:

 

Region 1 - Northeast at Shrewsbury, Mass.

John Mass and Timothy McGuire had two hits apiece as Newport, R.I., eliminated Old Town, Maine 5-2.

Trailing 2-0 through 5 1-2 innings, Portsmouth, N.H., scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and took a 3-2 victory over Essex Junction, Vt., in an elimination game.

Eric DePiero pitched a four-hitter and Brennan Frost's RBI in the second was the difference in a 1-0 victory for Beverly, Mass. over Hamburg, N.Y.

And host Shrewsbury, Mass., scored seven runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat Windsor Locks, Conn., 14-13. Shrewsbury took advantage of six walks, a wild pitch, two hit batters and an error to rally.

Friday’s schedule:

9:30 a.m.: Portsmouth, N.H. (1-1 in regional play) vs. Hamburg, N.Y. (1-1)

4:30 p.m.: Newport, R.I. (1-1) vs. Windsor Locks, Conn. (1-1)

7:30 p.m.: Beverly, Mass. (2-0) vs. Shrewsbury, Mass. (2-0)

 

Region 2 - Mid-Atlantic at Asheboro, N.C.

Starter and winner Cooper Newell struck out eight in 5 2-3 innings and reliever Gavin Gregory struck out three of the four batters he faced as Chesapeake, Va., eliminated 2018 ALWS champion Wilmington, Del., 3-2.

Dan Keenan threw a four-hitter with five strikeouts and Justin Marcario had three hits as Allentown, N.J., eliminated Norchester, Pa., 5-0.

Fuquay-Varina, N.C., erupted for 18 hits in a 17-6, 6-inning win over Harrisburg Paxton, Pa. Jack Starke had three hits and Michael Venditti had three hits (all doubles) and four RBIs for Fuquay-Varina, which scored 11 runs in the top of the sixth inning.

Tyler Quade threw a four-hitter with five strikeouts as Ridge St. Mary's, Md., defeated host Randolph County, N.C., 3-0. Shawn Cameron had two hits and one RBI for Ridge.

Friday’s schedule:

12:30 p.m.: Allentown, N.J. (1-1) vs. Harrisburg Paxton, Pa. (1-1)

4:30 p.m.: Chesapeake, Va. (1-1) vs. Randolph County, N.C. (1-1)

7:30 p.m.: Fuquay-Varina, N.C. (2-0) vs. Ridge St. Mary’s, Md. (2-0)

 

Region 3 - Southeast at Pelham, Ala.

New Orleans, La., eliminated Columbia, Tenn., 2-0.

Kody Hanna had three hits, including two home runs, and four RBIs as Florence, S.C., eliminated host Shelby County, Ala., 10-0 in five innings.

Troy, Ala., defeated Tallahassee, Fla., 13-3.

Jackson McCoy had three hits and three RBIs as Tupelo, Miss., defeated Covington, Ga., 5-3.

Friday’s schedule:

1 p.m.: Florence, S.C. (1-1) vs. Tallahassee, Fla. (1-1)

4 p.m.: New Orleans, La. (1-1) vs. Covington, Ga. (1-1)

7 p.m.: Troy, Ala. (2-0) vs. Tupelo, Miss. (2-0)

 

Region 4 - Mid-South at Hastings, Neb.

Starter and winner Charles Thomas struck out seven in six innings as Gretna, Neb., eliminated Pittsburg, Kan. 3-0. Jaron Lund led Gretna's offense with two hits.

Cody Vondera's two-out RBI single capped a four-run sixth inning for Washington, Mo., that erased a 4-1 deficit and led to a 5-4 victory over Grand Junction, Col., in an elimination game.

Cabot, Ark., banged out 17 hits — including three apiece from Hayden Prewitt, Kyler Carmack, Eli Hutcherson and Zach Hardcastle — in a 13-4 victory over Oak Grove, Mo.

Dubuque County, Iowa, held off a late rally by host Hastings, Neb., to win 10-9. Sawyer Nauman led Dubuque's 14-hit offense with four hits, including a double.

Friday’s schedule:

9:30 a.m.: Washington, Mo. (1-1) vs. Oak Grove, Mo. (1-1)

4:30 p.m.: Gretna, Neb. (1-1) vs. Hastings, Neb. (1-1)

6:30 p.m.: Cabot, Ark. (2-0) vs. Dubuque County, Iowa (2-0)

 

Region 5 - Great Lakes at Morgantown, W.Va.

Reliever Zachary Brennan extended the suspended no-hitter for Morgantown, W.Va., into the sixth inning before allowing four hits and two runs while also preserving a 3-2 opening round win over Harrison, Ohio. Reed Bailey had thrown 4 2-3 no-hit innings on Wednesday before he was replaced after the game was suspended due to inclement weather.

Barrington, Ill., built a 4-0 lead after 2 1-2 innings before holding off Bridgeport, W.Va., 4-3 in an elimination game. Logan Eisenbarth had three hits for Barrington and got the final two outs of the game to preserve the win for starter Jimmy Koza.

Blake Erskine threw a four-hitter and Harrison, Ohio scored twice in the fifth to overcome an early deficit to win 3-2 over Rock Island, Ill., in an elimination game.

Maxwell Coughlin and Brody Krzysiak combined on a five-hitter and Logan McCoy and Dylan Thompson had two hits and two RBIs apiece as Midland Berryhill, Mich., defeated Rockport, Ind., 9-0.

Jacob Kennell, Avante Neal, Anthony Marsh and Aaron Forbes had two hits apiece as host Morgantown, W.Va., defeated Owensboro, Ky., 12-2 in six innings.

Friday’s schedule:

11 a.m.: Harrison, Ohio (1-1) vs. Rockport, Ind. (1-1)

4 p.m.: Barrington, Ill. (1-1) vs. Owensboro, Ky. (1-1)

7 p.m.: Midland Berryhill, Mich. (2-0) vs. Morgantown, W.Va. (2-0)

 

Region 6 - Central Plains at Sioux Falls, S.D.

Host Sioux Falls, S.D., Empire Baseball got four-hit pitching from starter and winner Nicholas Lounsbery and reliever Tate Schafer as it won 8-0 over LaCrosse, Wis., early Thursday in a game suspended from the night before.

Braydon Skenandore, Benjamin Hencke and Joshua Brud had two hits apiece for DePere, Wis., which scored three runs in the top of the sixth in a 6-5 elimination game victory over Osseo, Minn.

Gabriel Olson had two hits and three RBIs and Brock Zimmer had two hits and two RBIs as Hopkins, Minn., eliminated LaCrosse, Wis., 10-2.

Reece Arbogast threw a four-hitter as Renner, S.D., defeated West Fargo, N.D., 2-0.

Fargo, N.D., led Sioux Falls, S.D. 5-3 after three innings before Thursday night’s game was postponed by weather until this morning.

Friday’s schedule:

9 a.m.: Resumption of Fargo, N.D.-Sioux Falls, S.D. game

12:30 p.m.: Hopkins, Minn. (1-1) vs. West Fargo, N.D. (1-1)

3:30 p.m.: DePere, Wis. (1-1) vs. loser of 9 a.m. game

7 p.m.: Renner, S.D. (2-0) vs. winner of 9 a.m. game

 

Region 7 - Northwest at Gillette, Wyo.

Starter and winner Cho Tofte and reliever Jarrett Allen combined on a six-hitter as Eugene, Ore., eliminated the Billings, Mont., Royals 4-2.

Tyler Tenney had three hits and four RBIs and three pitchers combined on a three-hitter as Helena, Mont., defeated Eagle River, Alaska, 13-0 in an elimination game.

Nick Gutierrez pitched a five-hitter and had two hits and two RBIs as Yakima Valley, Wash., defeated Cheyenne, Wyo., 8-3.

Nate Rose, Bradley Thompson and Davin Luce combined on a no-hitter for Idaho Falls, Idaho, in a 1-0 win over host Gillette, Wyo. Rose’s groundout to second in the top of the third inning scored R.J. Woods for the game’s only run.

Friday’s schedule:

10:30 a.m.: Helena, Mont. (1-1) vs. Cheyenne, Wyo. (1-1)

4 p.m.: Eugene, Ore. (1-1) vs. Gillette, Wyo. (1-1)

7 p.m.: Yakima, Wash. (2-0) vs. Idaho Falls, Idaho (2-0)

 

Region 8 - Western at Fairfield, Calif.

League City, Tex., eliminated Herriman, Utah, 6-3 as Lane Brewster had three hits and Adam Trevino threw a six-hitter.

Host Fairfield, Calif., eliminated Boulder Creek, Ariz., 6-3.

Honolulu, Haw., edged Petaluma, Calif., 5-4.

Henderson Southern Nevada defeated Rio Grande, N.M., 5-0.

Friday’s schedule:

9:30 a.m.: Fairfield, Calif. (1-1) vs. Petaluma, Calif. (1-1)

4:30 p.m.: League City, Tex. (1-1) vs. Rio Grande, N.M. (1-1)

6:30 p.m.: Honolulu, Haw. (2-0) vs. Henderson Southern Nevada (2-0)
