2021 American Legion Baseball regionals: Day 3 roundup

The field of 64 is down to 32 after Friday’s action in the 2021 American Legion Baseball regionals.

Here is a recap of the eight regionals through day three:

 

Region 1 - Northeast at Shrewsbury, Mass.

Jacob DaLuca pitched a six-hitter as Hamburg, N.Y., eliminated Portsmouth, N.H., 3-2.

Newport, R.I., rallied to force extra innings in a 3-2, 8-inning elimination game victory over Windsor Locks, Conn. A two-out balk tied the score at 1 in the seventh inning, then Timothy McGuire's RBI triple tied the score at 2 in the bottom of the eighth and McGuire scored the game-winner on Caleb Leys’ RBI single.

Cooper Gavin and Nick McIntyre combined on a six-hitter and McIntyre, Brennan Frost, Will Foglietta and Austin Foglietta had two hits apiece as Beverly, Mass., defeated Shrewsbury, Mass., 7-3 to remain the only unbeaten team in the regional.

Saturday’s schedule:

11 a.m.: Hamburg, N.Y. (2-1 in regional play) vs. Shrewsbury, Mass. (2-1)

2 p.m.: Newport, R.I. (2-1) vs. Beverly, Mass. (3-0)

 

Region 2 - Mid-Atlantic at Asheboro, N.C.

Dan Merkel and Pat Burns had two doubles as Allentown, N.J., eliminated Harrisburg Paxton, Pa., 12-2 in six innings.

M.J. Phillips and Eli Coley combined on a four-hitter as Chesapeake, Va., built a 4-0 lead after six innings, then held off a late rally by Randolph County, N.C., in an elimination game, 4-2. 

Logan Brock's walkoff two-out, two-run double was the difference as Ridge St. Mary's, Md., scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat Fuquay-Varina, N.C., 7-6 to remain the only unbeaten team in the regional.

Saturday’s schedule:

4:30 p.m.: Allentown, N.J. (2-1) vs. Fuquay-Varina, N.C. (2-1)

7:30 p.m.: Chesapeake, Va. (2-1) vs. Ridge St. Mary’s, Md. (3-0)

 

Region 3 - Southeast at Pelham, Ala.

Robbie Jordan threw a five-hitter and D.P. Pendergrass had four hits as Florence, S.C., eliminated Tallahassee, Fla., 3-1.

William Good threw an eight-hitter and had three hits as New Orleans, La., defeated Covington, Ga., 11-3 in an elimination game.

Stone Collier and Jackson Cheek had two hits and three RBIs apiece as Tupelo, Miss., defeated Troy, Ala., to remain the only unbeaten team in the regional.

Saturday’s schedule:

1 p.m.: Florence, S.C. (2-1) vs. Troy, Ala. (2-1)

4 p.m.: New Orleans, La. (2-1) vs. Tupelo, Miss. (3-0)

 

Region 4 - Mid-South at Hastings, Neb.

Sam Turilli had three hits and four pitchers, including winner Morgan Copeland, combined on a six-hitter for Washington, Mo., in a 6-2 elimination game victory over Oak Grove, Mo.

Host Hastings, Neb., eliminated Gretna, Neb., 3-2 behind a three-run third inning capped by Cambren Montague's two-out RBI single and Gabe Conant's 3 1-3 scoreless innings of relief.

Trey Schaber's two-run single, Tucker Nauman's bases-loaded walk and Ray Schlosser's sacrifice fly accounted for Dubuque County, Iowa's decisive four-run fourth inning in a 6-4 victory over Cabot, Ark., to make it the last unbeaten team in the regional.

Saturday’s schedule:

4:30 p.m.: Washington, Mo. (2-1) vs. Cabot, Ark. (2-1)

7:30 p.m.: Hastings, Neb. (2-1) vs. Dubuque County, Iowa (3-0)

 

Region 5 - Great Lakes at Morgantown, W.Va.

Houston Compton drove in two runs and starter and winner Jake Stuteville and reliever Spencer Sandage combined on a five-hitter as Rockport, Ind., eliminated Harrison, Ohio, 5-1.

Danny Hoffman threw a seven-hitter with eight strikeouts and Ryan Jenkins and Logan Eisenbarth had two hits apiece as Barrington, Ill., defeated Owensboro, Ky., 4-1 in an elimination game.

Derek Beougher, Alexander Money and Avon Guillory-Rivera had two hits apiece for Midland Berryhill, Mich., as it beat host Morgantown, W.Va., 7-3 to remain the lone unbeaten team in the regional.

Saturday’s schedule:

4 p.m.: Rockport, Ind. (2-1) vs. Morgantown, W.Va. (2-1)

7 p.m.: Barrington, Ill. (2-1) vs. Midland Berryhill, Mich. (3-0)

 

Region 6 - Central Plains at Sioux Falls, S.D.

Easton Rerick's two-out RBI single was the difference in a 6-5, 8-inning Fargo, N.D., win over host Sioux Falls, S.D., Empire Baseball in a game that was suspended on Thursday night.

Jake Perry and Brock Zimmer each had two hits, including a home run, starter and winner Ryan McGie and reliever Ryder Lane combined on a three-hitter as Hopkins, Minn., defeated West Fargo, N.D., 5-3 in an elimination game.

Ethan Susa scattered 10 hits and Wyatt Fischer hit a three-run home run as DePere, Wis., eliminated host Sioux Falls 6-1.

Caden Graf threw a three-hitter and Kobe Senn and Jaxon Beiswenger had two hits apiece as Fargo, N.D., defeated Renner, S.D., to remain the lone unbeaten team in the regional.

Saturday’s schedule:

1 p.m.: Hopkins, Minn. (2-1) vs. Renner, S.D. (2-1)

4 p.m.: DePere, Wis. (2-1) vs. Fargo, N.D. (3-0)

 

Region 7 - Northwest at Gillette, Wyo.

Cy Miller threw a five-hitter with 10 strikeouts and Ethan Keintz scored an unearned run in the first inning as Helena, Mont., edged Cheyenne, Wyo., 1-0 in an elimination game.

Jason Proudfit threw a four-hitter with 10 strikeouts and Jax Fraser drove in a third-inning run as Eugene, Ore., eliminated host Gillette, Wyo., 1-0.

Starter and winner Merit Jones struck out 10 in six innings and Nate Rose and McGwire Jephson had three hits apiece as Idaho Falls, Idaho, defeated Yakima Valley, Wash., 8-5 to remain the lone unbeaten team in the regional.

Saturday’s schedule:

4 p.m.: Helena, Mont. (2-1) vs. Yakima Valley, Wash. (2-1)

7 p.m.: Eugene, Ore. (2-1) vs. Idaho Falls, Idaho (3-0)

 

Region 8 - Western at Fairfield, Calif.

Host Fairfield, Calif., Expo Baseball eliminated Petaluma, Cal., 4-2 as Dayton Hicks threw a five-hitter and Aidan Robles drove in three runs.

Grant Pfaff's sixth-inning home run was the difference in a 5-4 League City, Tex., elimination game victory over Albuquerque Rio Grande, N.M.

Anthony Arecchi scored the go-ahead run on D.J. Akiyama’s single in the top of the fifth inning as Honolulu, Haw., defeated Henderson Southern Nevada 2-1 to remain the only undefeated team in the regional.

Saturday’s schedule:

4:30 p.m.: Fairfield, Calif. (2-1) vs. Henderson Southern Nevada (2-1)

7:30 p.m.: League City, Tex. (2-1) vs. Honolulu, Haw. (3-0)
