2022 Legion Baseball Regionals: Championship Sunday

The field is set for the 95th American Legion World Series after the eight regional champions were crowned on Sunday.

Here’s the roundup of Sunday’s games.

 Region 1: Northeast

At Shrewsbury, Mass.

Game 14: Shrewsbury (Mass.) Post 397 d. Cumberland (R.I.) Post 14, 4-2

Post 397 earned its third trip to the American Legion World Series in six years with an undefeated record in the Northeast Regional. Zachary Amero scored twice for Shrewsbury, tallying the game’s first run on Alexander Martin’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second inning and tying the game at 2 in the bottom of the fourth when he scored on an error. Patrick McManus reached on a fielder’s choice in the sixth inning to score James Railsback, then McManus scored on Ryan Walton’s single to make it 4-2. Ryan Sande earned the win with two innings of no-hit relief.

 Region 2: Mid-Atlantic

At Morgantown, W. Va.

Game 14: Chesapeake (Va.) Post 280 d. Frederick (Md.) Post 11, 12-2 (6 innings)

Spencer Sigmon and Trent Holland each had 3 RBIs and Brendan Hawley threw a two-hitter for Post 280, which wrapped up a perfect record in the Mid-Atlantic Regional. Cooper Newell (2 hits, double, 2 RBIs) and Gavin Whitehurst (2 hits) also sparked Chesapeake’s offense.

Region 3: Southeast

At Asheboro, N.C.

Game 14: Rock Hill (S.C.) Post 34 d. Wilmington (N.C.) Post 10, 5-4 (10 innings) (Wilmington eliminated): Jack Burton’s single drove in Ethan Belk for the game-winning run, sending Post 34 into an all-South Carolina championship game in the Southeast Regional.

Game 15: Camden (S.C.) Post 17 d. Rock Hill (S.C.) Post 34, 7-5

Post 17 used a four-run sixth inning to rally for the regional championship. Down 4-2, Jamari Harris singled in two runs to tie the game, Max Branham followed with an RBI single to score Alex Simmons, and Harris scored when Patrick Daniels reached on a fielding error.

Region 4: Mid-South

At Pelham, Ala.

Game 14: Gonzales (La.) Post 81 d. Tupelo (Miss.) Post 49, 11-9 (Tupelo eliminated): Tanner Vadnais and Will Delaune drove in three runs each as Post 81 edged Tupelo in a game delayed by severe weather.

Game 15: Troy (Ala.) Post 70 d. Gonzales (La.) Post 81, 6-2

Tucker Jackson struck out 10 in six innings of work to lead Post 70 to the Mid-South Regional title. Troy scored in each of the first four innings, including a three-run third in which they took advantage of a throwing error and a wild pitch.

Region 5: Great Lakes

At Midland, Mich.

Game 14: Midland (Mich.) Post 165 d. Yeager/Benson (Ohio) Post 199, 7-2

Lane Kloha threw a seven-hitter with six strikeouts for his second win of the regional to move Post 165 into the World Series. Midland’s offense was led by Tanner Sonntag (2 hits, home run, 2 RBIs) and Brody Krzysiak (2 hits).

Region 6: Central Plains

At Rapid City, S.D.

Game 14: Millard South (Neb.) Post 374 d. Omaha (Neb.) Post 1, 9-3: Braden Cannon threw a seven-hitter with four strikeouts for Post 374, which forced a Game 15 by handing Post 1 its first loss of the regional.

Game 15: Omaha (Neb.) Post 1 d. Millard South (Neb.) Post 374, 7-4

In the championship game, Post 374 jumped out to a 4-0 lead after two innings, but Post 1 rallied to advance to the ALWS. Elliott Peterson’s triple in the top of the fifth scored Jack Thiele for the tying run, and the next batter, Grant Sommers, singled to score Peterson for the go-ahead run. Grant Wagner earned the win, scattering four hits and allowing just one run in 6 1/3 innings of relief.

Region 7: Northwest

At Gillette, Wyo.

Game 14: Cheyenne (Wyo.) Post 6 d. Idaho Falls (Idaho) Post 56, 9-4: Post 6 scored 7 runs in the top of the second inning to force a 15th game in the Northwest Regional.

Game 15: Idaho Falls (Idaho) Post 56 d. Cheyenne (Wyo.) Post 6, 6-5 (9 innings)

Post 56’s bid for an unprecedented third straight ALWS title remains alive after the Bandits, who let a 4-0 lead slip away, rallied to avenge their loss from earlier in the day. R.J. Woods hit a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to force extra innings, then scored the winning run in the ninth on Conner Hall’s single.

Region 8: Western

At Fairfield, Calif.

Game 14: League City (Tex.) Post 554 d. Kapolei (Haw.) Post 1, 6-2 (Kapolei eliminated): Jacob Cyr scattered eight hits across 6 1/3 innings and Kameren Hardebeck earned the save for Post 554.

Game 15: League City (Tex.) Post 554 d. Petaluma (Calif.) Post 28, 3-2

Post 554 scored all three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to rally for the Western Regional title. Tristan Zarella’s triple brought Jeron Petterson home to make it 2-1, then Kyeler Thompson singled to score Zarella for a tie game. Three batters later, with the bases loaded, Brandon Vassallo singled to left to score Thompson for the winning run.
