Wings Over Muskegon Airshow

Wings Over Muskegon will engage the public from July 6th-July 9th with four days of flying opportunities in Yankee Air Museum’s four incredible aircraft including the B-17 Bomber of WWII and the Huey Helicopter of the Vietnam War. Along with public aircraft rides, Wings Over Muskegon brings back an air show on July 8th-July 9th featuring the USAF A-10 Thunderbolt II Demonstration Team to showcase world-class military and civilian aviators along with appealing ground displays and exhibits that will provide exceptional all-day entertainment for West Michigan families.

O'Connor Americanism Trophy department narrative due to National Headquarters

The Daniel J. O’Connor Americanism Trophy is awarded annually to the department selected from among the top three departments attaining the greatest number of percentage points which are derived from the activities reported on the Consolidated Post Report form, and to the department which submits the best narrative statement supporting the claim of points shown. The winner will be selected from the aforementioned three departments based on the best narrative statement supporting the claim of points determined from the Consolidated Post Report.

Legion Baseball scholarship applications due to National Headquarters

The American Legion awards between $22,000 and $25,000 in scholarships to deserving baseball players each year. Each Department Baseball Committee may select a player from its department to receive this scholarship. Download the Legion Baseball scholarship form. Any team manager or head coach of an American Legion post–affiliated team may nominate a player for consideration of this award.

Child Welfare Foundation grant applications due to National Headquarters

The American Legion Child Welfare Foundation (CWF) accepts funding proposals from nonprofits for projects that contribute to the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual welfare of children. Grants are only given to entities that help U.S. children in a large geographic area; they are not awarded for day-to-day or special operating expenses. Learn more at the CWF website.  

32nd Junior Shooting Sports Championship

The American Legion 3-Position Junior Air Rifle Championship in Colorado Springs, Colo., will be held July 20-22. The top 15 youth marksmen in both the precision and sporter category will compete by shooting a .177 caliber air rifle in three positions: prone, standing and kneeling. The top eight shooters in both categories will be finalized July 21and advance to the championship round the morning of July 22. One competitor will win the championship title in each category, along with a $5,000 college scholarship provided by The American Legion and the Sons of The American Legion.

Boys Nation

The American Legion's Boys Nation program will be July 21-29, Washington, D.C. Ninety-eight incoming high school seniors who are representing their respective department Boys State program will meet at Marymount University in Arlington, Va., and spend a week immersed in the political process. During their eight days at American Legion Boys Nation, the “senators” will learn from a hands-on approach how the U.S. Senate and the federal government function.

Department Service Officers (DSO) School

DSO School is July 26-28. The American Legion conducts two Department Service Officer School sessions each year. DSO School is geared for the professional accredited American Legion representative at the regional office, county and state levels. Attendees must be endorsed by the department adjutant, who must submit a certification form to National Headquarters. Learn how to attend DSO School.

Delegate Strength membership target date

National Headquarters must receive transmittals for delegate strength during normal business hours on or before 30 days prior to the beginning of National Convention. Delegate strength is determined by total membership, including DMS members, in the hands of the national treasurer 30 days prior to the national convention. Total number of delegates for each department is based on five delegates at large,
one delegate for each 1,000 members or major fraction thereof, and the members of the National Executive Committee.

National Membership Workshop

Certification of department Legion Baseball tournament champion due to National Headquarters

The department championship team must be certified to the Americanism Commission by the authorized department baseball official no later than 11:59 p.m. July 29. However, departments that fly to regional sites
must certify their department champion no later than 11:59 p.m. July 27.
