Legion conference set to 'employ and empower' veterans

Veterans and servicemembers who are looking for jobs will find valuable opportunities again this year at the Legion's national convention through a two-day event that offers job skills training and a chance to connect with employers who are looking to hire.

The Employment and Empowerment Summit will invite veterans, active-duty military and their spouses to Charlotte, N.C., from Aug. 25-26 for two days worth of panels from employment experts, workshops that explain what employers on hand want in job candidates and networking receptions. The event, which is free of charge, coincides with The American Legion's 96th National Convention.

Each day will begin with a free networking breakfast, and then segue into employment workshops where industry leaders in the public and private sectors offer guidance on how to find employment in their respective industries and organizations. Officials from Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, GE, Citi, Nexstar Legacy Foundation, Easter Seals, and the Departments of Veterans Affairs and Office of Personnel Management will be present.

A working lunch and evening networking reception will be provided each day. Presenters, officials and hiring managers from each corporation and organization will be in attendance.

On the second day, the Legion will host a Hiring Our Heroes career fair at the Charlotte Convention Center with employers such as Northrop Grumman, Citi, UPS, Bank of America and many others in attendance. Prior to the fair, attendees can participate in a resume writing workshop to receive individual assistance with authoring and refining their resumes.

The career fair, which runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., will culminate with an "Employers' Lunch and Learn" session sponsored by USAA.

Attendees can pre-register for the job fair on the U.S. Chamber of Commerce's Hiring Our Heroes website.

With its various opportunities to help attendees find employment and improve as job candidates, the Employment and Empowerment Summit figures to cater especially to transitioning servicemembers.

The event, coordinated by the Legion's Veterans Employment and Education Division, will continue what has become a Legion tradition of bringing jobs to national convention. Last year, the Legion's career fair brought more than 80 employers to Houston. More than 600 veterans, servicemembers and spouses attended, and almost 30 job offers were given.
