Legion, U.S. Mint still working on coin designs

Legion Family members, coin collectors and others will be able to order The American Legion’s commemorative coin at this time next year.

Right now, the Legion is working with the U.S. Mint and others to finalize the designs for the gold, silver and half-dollar coins that celebrate the centennial of the Legion. The Treasury Secretary has final approval of the coins’ designs.

Once a set of three coins, obverse and reverse, are approved, the U.S. Mint will decide when to strike them. All coins are expected to go on sale in March 2019. The entire three-coin set is expected to be sold individually and in sets.

Unique among U.S. Mint products, all surcharges received from the sale of The American Legion centennial coin will help raise money for Legion programs that support veterans, servicemembers and their families, as well as commemorate important aspects of American history and culture. The funds gained from sales will support caring for those who served and are currently serving in the armed forces, and programs that maintain patriotic values, strong families and assistance for at-risk children.

The formal unveiling of the coin designs will take place this coming summer.
