Texas to dedicate centennial monument

To celebrate the upcoming centennial of The American Legion, the Department of Texas is dedicating a monument on July 14 in downtown San Antonio.

The monument will house two original plaques used to mark the American Legion Highway 281, which was dedicated in 1932, said Al Alford, 20th district commander who has overseen the project. The monument will also include a 50-year time capsule containing commemorative items from Legion posts in the Department of Texas.

“We’re pretty proud of it,” Alford said.

The department funded the monument, which will be unveiled during a ceremony at the Cadena Reeves Justice Street on Dolorosa Street. Department Commander John Hince will give the keynote address.
