Fifty-five American Legion members representing 40 departments will gather at American Legion National Headquarters in Indianapolis Oct. 27 to Nov. 2 for the 19th consecutive session of National Legion College. Past National Commander David Rehbein will lead the students as the program's chancellor.

Legion College is an opportunity for new and longtime Legionnaires to enhance their knowledge of the organization and its overall mission, learn how to become an effective leader at every level, and be challenged on real Legion issues. As a group, the students will meet in the National Executive Committee room on the fourth floor of the headquarters building to focus on training and hear from distinguished guest speaker American Legion National Commander Brett Reistad.

Training topics that the students will engage in throughout the week include:

  • Working with other personality types

  • Running effective meetings

  • Organizational life cycles

  • Legion history

  • National training initiatives

  • Leadership in a nonprofit

  • Membership engagement

  • Resolution writing

  • Train the trainer

  • Creating an effective strategic plan

  • Creating and/or improving department Legion Colleges

  • Developing your "why" to belong in The American Legion

The students will also learn how to create training videos and receive leadership scenarios that involves a post-level conflict that they must discuss and decide how to best resolve.

And on Nov. 2, the Legion College Class of 2018 will graduate.
