Legion condemns Nazi flags, violence at Virginia rally

American Legion National Commander Charles E. Schmidt condemned white nationalists who waved Nazi flags during a violent rally Saturday in Charlottesville, Va.

"On behalf of America's 2 million Legionnaires, we strongly condemn the violence that took place in Charlottesville on Saturday,” Schmidt said. “Americans fought fascism and crushed the Nazis in World War II, and anyone who waves a Nazi flag on our soil is, by very definition, anti-American. The disgusting displays of hatred and bigotry on display in Charlottesville dishonor all veterans who fought and died to stamp out fascism. We have one flag: the American flag. We are one people: the American people.”

During the rally and counter protest, Heather Heyer, 32, was killed and 19 others were Injured when a car rammed a crowd of counter-protesters.

“Our hearts go out to the family of Heather Heyer and all those injured," Schmidt said.
