Legion, Sears, Rebuilding Together teaming up

American Legion volunteers will team up with Rebuilding Together and Sears Heroes at Home on Aug. 23 to revitalize the 100-year-old De George at Union Station homeless veterans facility in Houston.

De George at Union Station, 1418 Preston St., is a non-profit managed by the Housing Corp of Greater Houston that provides housing for homeless veterans, both men and women. Residents are welcome to live at the six-floor facility with no set time limit and sliding scale rate, with some people in residence for as long as 10 years. Each room comes equipped with a bathroom, bed, microwave and small refrigerator. More than 900 veterans, ranging in ages 27-84, have lived at the De George during the 13 years of operations and require services such as shuttle rides to medical appointments.

The work to be done on the building Aug. 23 will include replacing old carpeting on all five floors, replacing ceiling fans, painting all of the hallways and collecting donated goods for residents to use. Work will begin at approximately 8:45 a.m. CDT.

A small group of American Legion Riders will assist in the renovation, while a larger group of Riders will perform a parade lap around the facility at 9:30 a.m. CDT.
