Atlanta welcomes American Legion GI Bill exhibit

The traveling exhibit celebrating The American Legion's role in the creation of the GI Bill continues its run in Georgia, moving from Douglas to the department headquarters just outside Atlanta.

Past Department Commander Randy Goodman, who was instrumental in bringing the exhibit to Stockbridge, is excited to use "The Greatest Legislation: An American Legion Centennial Salute to the GI Bill" as a tool for outreach and to create awareness of the many accomplishments of The American Legion, not only nationally, but also in their own backyard. "We want to connect with our community," Goodman said.

Department staff and Georgia leaders are planning a community barbecue, and are working to bring in students from two nearby schools to view the exhibit. The exhibit will also be available for general viewing from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday for the duration of the exhibit. Department staff will be on hand to greet viewers and answer questions.

The department headquarters has recently undergone renovations which involved the creation of new office space, conference rooms and an atrium, which now houses the GI Bill exhibit. The final stage of the project is the completion of the history room, which will feature awards, artifacts and life-size mannequins of the three past national commanders from Georgia. The department will close the GI Bill exhibit and celebrate the completion of the renovation projects with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on April 30, during National Commander Brett Reistad's official visit to the department.

The American Legion Department of Georgia Headquarters is located at 3035 Mt Zion Road, Stockbridge, Ga. For more information or to schedule an appointment to view the exhibit, call 678-289-8883 or email amerlegga@bellsouth.net.
