Game 12: Brooklawn, N.J., 4; Omaha, Neb., 3
Brooklawn came back from a one-run loss to New Orleans in the opening game and put itself in the final day of play with a one-run victory over Omaha. The returning 2011 ALWS team will meet Bellevue, Wash., in Game 14 to see who plays in the championship game against New Orleans.
“We are ready for tomorrow (Tuesday) — we have been waiting for this,” said Brooklawn left fielder Pat Kane.
Heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, Brooklawn had a 4-2 lead. But Omaha right fielder Evan Ryan swatted an RBI to close the lead 4-3. Brooklawn kept Omaha scoreless in the last two innings to close out the Central Plains regional champ’s 51-10 season.
“We were trying to get bats and get a couple more runs when we headed into the ninth (inning) just to have some more insurance,” Kane said. “We just put more pressure on us to take the win.”
Brooklawn had 22 of the 23 stolen bases for the game. Brooklawn got its runs from RBI singles delivered by Kane, center fielder Steven Wilgus and designated hitter Giovanni Gussen. The three runs by Omaha were RBIs from right fielder Evan Ryan.
New Jersey (58-4) had 10 hits and zero errors. Nebraska (51-10) had eight hits and four errors.
Game 13: Bellevue, Wash., 10; New Orleans 6
New Orleans was undefeated heading into Game 13, but fierce pitching and tough defense gave the Mid-South regional champions its first loss. Regardless, New Orleans’ spot in the championship game is still safe, thanks to the double-elimination format at ALWS.
Legion baseball fans and the scoreboard saw no more than two runs an inning until the bottom of the eighth when Bellevue scored three runs to claim a 10-6 victory.
New Orleans had a one-run lead on Bellevue until third baseman Aaron Sandefur hit a home run in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game 3-3. Once New Orleans relief pitcher Andrew Mitchell walked Bellevue catcher Jimmy Sinatro with bases loaded, the Northwest region champs ran away with the win. After remaining scoreless for three straight innings, New Orleans tried to rally in the ninth by putting two more runs on the board but it wasn’t enough to make a comeback.
Both Andrew Kemmerer and Jake Bakamus had RBI triples for Bellevue, while Matt Sinatro, Jimmy Sinatro and Aaron Sandefur each had an RBI. Pitcher Jacob Rosen picked up the win on the mound, allowing seven hits and striking out four in 4.2 innings of work.
