After losing Friday night’s final game, Bossier City Post 202 cruised in Saturday’s opener.
After losing the finale of Friday’s opening day of the 2025 American Legion World Series, some might think it unfair for Bossier City (La.) Post 202 to have to play again less than 12 hours after that game had ended.
Post 202 coach Dane Peavy said his team embraced the opportunity. And did they ever by defeating Greece (N.Y.) Post 468, 14-1, in record-setting fashion in Saturday’s opener at Veterans Field at Keeter Stadium in Shelby, N.C.
Bossier City’s 11-run bottom of the third inning was the second-largest in ALWS history; only eventual 1988 ALWS champion Cincinnati (Ohio) Post 507’s 14-run inning in a victory over Kingston (N.Y.) was larger.
And Post 202’s 14 total runs was the most in an ALWS since the governing body changed from 9-inning games to 7-inning games in 2017.
“We welcomed the quick turnaround,” said Peavy, whose team lost 7-6 to Asheville (N.C.) Post 70 in a game that ended a few minutes before 11 p.m. Friday night. “After a game like that, you want to get on the field as quick as possible. You don’t want anything to linger.
“We may have had a hangover in those first two innings but once we pushed through, we got comfortable in the box and they made some mistakes out there that we were able to capitalize on.”
Led by Hudson Brignac (2 hits), Jackson Jones (2 hits, 2 RBIs), Cole Snell (3-run home run), Easton Sanders (1 hit, 3 RBIs) and Kade Bryant (2-run single), Bossier City had nine hits, drew eight walks and took advantage of three Greece errors.
Sanders, Bryant and Jones had two-run singles in the 11-run third and Snell’s three-run home run accounted for the fourth-inning scoring.
On the mound, starter Tanner Webb (4 innings, 3 strikeouts) and reliever Abel Thetford (1 inning, 1 strikeout) combined on a four-hitter.
Bossier City (25-4) closes out its pool play games against Chesapeake (Va.) Post 280 on Sunday at 10 a.m.
“The way I look at it is a ‘win and you’re in’ deal,” said Peavy, whose team lost a 3-2 heartbreaker in its third game last season to be eliminated from the semifinals. “We were in this position last year. We just want to play our game.”
Greece (24-8), making its first ALWS appearance, may well be eliminated from the semifinals before it closes pool play against Asheville on 7 p.m. Sunday night; Post 468 lost its Friday opener 9-2 to Chesapeake.
Wes Sturrup’s fifth-inning home run accounted for Greece’s lone run.
