The North Dakota team’s win in Game 3 sent them into another game on Saturday night in the double-elimination tournament.

In a battle of the Dakotas, North topped South in Game 3 of the Centennial Classic on Saturday.

LaMoure (N.D.) Post 19 defeated the hosts from Milbank (S.D.) Post 9, 8-3, to stay alive in the tournament celebrating American Legion Baseball’s 100th birthday.

Milbank was eliminated from the double-elimination tournament after also losing Friday to Broken Bow (Neb.) Post 126. LaMoure’s win sent them into another elimination game later Saturday, facing the loser of Game 4’s matchup between Broken Bow and Glenwood/Lowry (Minn.) Posts 187/253.

After being shut out in Friday’s 10-0 loss, Milbank — playing as the designated visitors for the second game — scored their first run of the tournament when leadoff hitter and starting pitcher Joe Schulte scored on Mack Koplin’s sacrifice fly in the top of the first inning on Saturday.

LaMoure answered in the bottom of the inning, taking a 2-1 lead on scores by Blase Isaacson and Colby Thielges.

Milbank tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the second when Schulte reached on a fielder’s choice to score Nollen Sheeley. Easton Thielges scored in the bottom of the inning to put LaMoure back in front for good.

Logan Potts held Milbank to 3 hits in 6 innings to earn the win for LaMoure, which had just four hits themselves but took advantage of five Milbank errors, five walks and three hit-by-pitches to fend off elimination. Joey Potts allowed two hits in the seventh but worked out of the jam for LaMoure.
