The North Carolina native becomes the 1st catcher to win the All-Star break event.
Seattle Mariner and American Legion Baseball alumnus Cal Raleigh became the first catcher to win the All-Star Home Run Derby on Monday night.
Raleigh, who played Legion Baseball for Post 47 in Waynesville, N.C., hit 18 home runs in his final-round showdown with Tampa Bay’s Junior Caminero.
Raleigh edged the Athletics’ Brent Rooker in the first round when both finished with 17 home runs, but Raleigh’s home run was just far enough — less than an inch — to edge Rooker on the tiebreaker.
Raleigh entered the All-Star break with 38 home runs, just one shy of Barry Bonds’ record for home runs by the break.
Raleigh will start at catcher for the American League All-Star team in Tuesday night’s All-Star Game.
