The U.S. will face Venezuela or Italy on Tuesday after Sunday’s 2-1 win over the Dominican Republic.
American Legion Baseball alumnus Gunnar Henderson helped the U.S. team advance to its third straight World Baseball Classic championship game with a game-tying solo home run in Sunday night’s 2-1 win over the Dominican Republic.
Henderson, who played Legion Baseball for Post 20 in Selma, Ala., was moved from shortstop to third base for the semifinal matchup due to his MLB success against Dominican starter Luis Severino. Henderson had been 7-of-9 with a double and a home run against Severino.
On Sunday, with the U.S. down 1-0 after Junior Caminero’s second-inning home run, Henderson homered off Severino to lead off the fourth and tied the game.
One out later, Roman Anthony added a solo home run for the U.S., which held on for the win.
The U.S. will face either Venezuela or Italy in Tuesday's championship game (8 p.m. ET, FS1). Those teams meet in Monday’s other semifinal.
