Legion alumni help U.S. to 2-0 start in World Baseball Classic

Team USA opens with wins over Brazil, Great Britain.

The U.S. team is off to a 2-0 start in pool play in the World Baseball Classic after weekend victories over Brazil and Great Britain.

They’ll round out pool play with games March 9 vs. Mexico and March 10 against Italy. The top two finishers in each of the four pools will advance to the quarterfinals March 13-14 in Miami and Houston.

A look at the U.S. team’s first two wins in the 2026 World Baseball Classic, including highlights from American Legion Baseball alumni:

U.S. 15, Brazil 5

Team USA scored seven runs in the top of the ninth inning, taking advantage of five walks, to open the WBC with a win on March 5.

Among Legion Baseball alumni, Bryce Harper (Las Vegas) was 1-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored; Alex Bregman (Albuquerque, N.M.) walked four times and scored twice, adding an RBI; Cal Raleigh (Post 47/Waynesville, N.C.) walked three times and scored twice, with an RBI; and Michael Wacha (Texarkana, Tex.) pitched three innings in relief, allowing three runs and four hits while striking out five.

U.S. 9, Great Britain 1

Down 1-0 for much of the game, Team USA broke out with a five-run fifth inning on March 6 and cruised from there.

After Kyle Schwarber’s two-run home run put the U.S. up 3-1, Gunnar Henderson (Post 20/Selma, Ala.) followed with a two-run, two-out double that drove in fellow Legion Baseball alumni Bregman and Harper.

Bregman went 1-for-3 with 2 RBIs; Harper was 1-for-4; and Henderson finished 4-for-5.
