Veteran service officers will be on hand June 13-15 at Post 282 in La Mesa to assist veterans with VA benefits claims during Be the One Weekend.
The American Legion’s Be the One veteran suicide prevention program will be on full display this weekend during a membership outreach effort in the Department of California.
La Mesa’s American Legion Post 282 in the state’s District 22 will serve as the base for the effort, which will take place from 9 a.m.- 4 p.m. Friday to Sunday.
In addition to promoting Be the One, the weekend will provide area veterans to receive free assistance with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs benefits claims, learn about American Legion programs and advocacy, and take part in Buddy Checks.
The schedule for events at and around Post 282, 8118 University Ave., La Mesa, is:
· 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, June 13: Accredited American Legion service officers will be available from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. to assist veterans and their families with VA claims at no cost and answer other questions related to benefits. Additionally, a membership outreach program with Buddy Checks will be conducted at this time. There will be a sponsored lunch, as well as dinner and live music at the post that evening.
· 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 14: A Veteran Resource Expo will take place from noon to 4 p.m. and will include organizations such as Courage to Call, Honor Flight, VETART, Work for Warriors, Guide Dogs of America and the San Diego Veterans Coalition. Service officers will also be on hand to help veterans from 10 a.m.-4 p.m, and continued membership outreach will take place.
· 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, June 15: Outreach and door knocking, as well as a family barbecue and kid-friendly activities.
Members of the American Legion Family also will take part in La Mesa’s 26th annual Flag Day Parade nearby on June 14.
