Teen honoring Be the One with second annual 5K event

College freshman organizing 5K/10K walk/run to raise awareness and funds for Be the One, the Legion’s mission to eradicate veterans suicide.

Lauren Godfrey is a college freshman who is dedicated to supporting veterans through The American Legion’s Be the One mission.

Godfrey, who is attending North Carolina State University, is planning her second annual 5K in honor of Be the One, the Legion’s mission to prevent veteran suicide. “I read the statistics about veteran suicide and wanted to do something about it,” she said.

So she did.

Last year, she put together a 5K event to support Be the One as part of her Girl Scout Gold Award project. This year, the second annual event will add a 10K race and be a fundraiser for Be the One, said Godfrey, who attended Tar Heel Girls State after being sponsored by Post 436 in Angier.

The 5K/10K Be the One race will be held May 16, starting at 9 a.m., at 210 South Main St. in Broadway, N.C. Click here to register. Veterans use code Veteran26 for $20 off.
