American Legion Family Day is April 25. We want to know what our Legion Family members have planned for that day.
In October 2022, The American Legion National Executive Committee passed Resolution No. 7, American Legion Family Day. The resolution established an American Legion Family Day to be observed annually on the last Saturday of April — this year falling on April 25.
For American Legion Family Day, posts are encouraged to open their doors to members of their community for the day to recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of Legionnaires, Sons of The American Legion members, Legion Riders and American Legion Auxiliary. The day is also an opportunity to bring awareness to the organization’s Be the One mission to reduce the rate of veteran suicide and destigmatize the need to ask for help.
That was the case last year at Winnow-Arn Post 541 in the Village of Continental, Ohio. The post’s American Legion Family came together to host an American Legion Family Day event that drew hundreds of members of a community of just over 1,100. The event featured free food and drinks, activities for all ages and community resources available to veterans and their families.
But the theme of the day was Be the One. “We want (attendees) to take away the mission of Be the One,” said American Legion Auxiliary Department of Ohio First Vice President Mindi Rue, a member of Unit 541. “We need for everybody to be trained and be able to see those flags that we’re trained to see. Not just for our veterans, but just to be better with everybody that’s around us. That’s the biggest thing I want them to take away.”
