100 senators will arrive in the nation’s capital for ‘a week that shapes a lifetime’.
The 79th session of American Legion Boys Nation begins this weekend with the arrival of 100 young men from across the country in the Beltway to participate in “a week that shapes a lifetime.”
From July 18-25, two “senators” representing each state except Hawaii, and the District of Columbia, will simulate the U.S. Senate through the political process. They’ll also elect a president, vice president, president pro tempore and secretary of the senate during their stay at Marymount University in Arlington, Va.
The senators, all of whom are entering their senior year of high school, will be divided into two political parties, and each senator will write, introduce and debate a bill of his choosing before an appropriate Senate committee.
The Boys Nation senators will also join their counterparts from Girls Nation, sponsored by The American Legion Auxiliary, in meeting with their real-world senators and their staffs during a visit to Capitol Hill. Other off-campus activities on the schedule for the programs include visits to Arlington National Cemetery, the U.S. Supreme Court, the Pentagon, various monuments and memorials, and Joint Base Myer-Henderson for Twilight Tattoo.
