The American Legion College convenes Sunday in Indianapolis for its 10th meeting since being reinstituted as an organizational event. Around 50 students will attend.

The National American Legion College convenes Sunday afternoon at National Headquarters in Indianapolis. Around 50 students will attend the workshop, which teaches leadership, management and communication, and covers Legion-oriented topics, including service work, youth programs, post development and revitalization, legislation and veterans issues.

Past National Commander and Legion College chancellor Butch Miller is the event’s first speaker and will address the group Sunday afternoon. Former National Adjutant Robert W. Spanogle will also speak, along with current National Adjutant Daniel S. Wheeler, who gives a briefing of Legion history on Monday.

Attendees will split into groups for daily presentations and assignments, which include writing resolutions and strategic plans for developing posts. Groups give a final presentation on revitalizing their posts Friday morning, with graduation following that morning.

The American Legion College originally began in 1946 but ceased the next decade. It resumed in 1999, after a 21st-Century Ad Hoc Committee report recommended the Legion College be reinstituted. It continues annually today as an education opportunity for future Legion leaders.
