Peace Officers Memorial Day and Police Week pays tribute to the local, state and federal peace officers who have died, or who have been disabled, in the line of duty.

American Legion National Commander Denise H. Rohan issued the following statement in observance of Peace Officers Memorial Day on May 15:

“The sacrifices made by our law enforcement community are not unlike the sacrifices made by veterans. On Peace Officers Memorial Day, we call on all Americans to reflect on the men and women in blue who have died in the line of duty. They made the ultimate sacrifice to keep our communities safe. We owe it to these brave heroes and their families to never forget what they have done for us and to continue to support and appreciate those who go into harm’s way every day to defend us from danger, rescue us from accidents, assist us in disasters and keep our neighborhoods safe. Simply put, they are America’s finest.”
