Compassion, prayers and our American Legion Family

National Commander LaCoursiere: Since our organization’s founding, the Legion Family has always responded to our fellow Americans in need. I am confident that won’t stop now.

The flood waters are deep, but our collective tears are deeper. Programs, grants and supplies will not bring back the campers lost, the families drowned and the people perished during last week’s flood in and around Kerrville, Texas. For grieving survivors,  The American Legion Family can offer our love, compassion and prayers. The same for those impacted by Tropical Storm Chantal, which tore through regions of  North Carolina, a state still recovering from Hurricane Helene.

We can be inspired by first responders such as Coast Guard Rescue Swimmer Scott Ruskan, who helped save the lives of 165 Texas flood victims. We can also learn whatever lessons can be taken from such disasters in the hope that lives will be saved during future ones. We can offer our labor, resources and efforts toward post and department outreach to the communities that are recovering.

The greatest tragedy is always the loss of life. But homes have been washed away, and our fellow Americans will need our help as they rebuild. Legionnaires are encouraged to contact their department headquarters to apply for assistance through our National Emergency Fund if they suffered damages.  Those with children living in their household may be eligible for Temporary Financial Assistance.  Buddy Checks have saved many lives. In the days ahead, it is even more essential for us to Be the One to those who are hurting.

Since our organization’s founding, The American Legion Family has always responded to our fellow Americans in need. I am confident that we won’t stop now.

God Bless Texas, North Carolina and all those impacted by these latest disasters.
