Tour options for city, surrounding area abound.
Destination Tahoe Meetings & Events is offering several tours during the Legion’s 99th National Convention in Reno. Legionnaires and their families are encouraged to take advantage of these tour options, listed here with dates and per-person prices:
Historic Virginia City ($42) – Aug. 18, 21, 24
Relive the Old West and be a pioneer for a day at historic Virginia City, once the richest place on earth. You will have time to explore on your own, and you have the option of a narrated trolley ride or a mine tour.
Historic Donner-Truckee ($44) – Aug. 18, 22
The Donner-Truckee area is rich in pioneer lore. This was the route of westward-bound emigrants who struggled with their wagons over the rugged Sierra Nevada mountain passes. This tour includes a visit to Donner Memorial Historic Park and the Emigrant Trail Museum; it was here, during the winter of 1846-1847, that members of the Donner Party played out their tragic rendezvous with destiny.
Shopping shuttle ($34) – Aug. 19, 21
Continuous shuttles will give you a chance to enjoy Reno’s top shopping centers: Meadowood Mall and, a little further south, The Summit.
Paddlewheel Dinner Dance Cruise ($148) – Aug. 19, 21
Sightsee from all three decks of M.S. Dixie II, the largest and most sophisticated paddlewheeler ever to cruise Lake Tahoe. Along with impressive views of the lake, surrounding mountains, Emerald Bay and Vikingsholm Castle, guests will enjoy a plated three-course dinner, dancing and live music.
Paddlewheel Cruise With Lunch ($111) – Aug. 20, 23
M.S. Dixie II will depart from the pier and begin a leisurely cruise along Tahoe’s southern shoreline as the towering mountains above Stateline come into full view. Buffet lunch is included.
Lake Tahoe Excursion With Scenic Gondola ($138) – Aug. 25
Enjoy a full day experiencing the best of what Tahoe has to offer. Stops include:
- Vista Point, a granite-tree-lined-scenic overlook with great photo opportunities.
- Zephyr Cove Resort, with tree-lined beaches, marina and lodge restaurant.
- Heavenly Gondola. Guests will ride up the mountain, disembarking at the observation deck at just over 9,000 feet. There they can take in 180-degree views of Lake Tahoe and the surrounding mountains. Continuing on the gondola to the top of the mountain, guests will have time to explore Heavenly Adventure Peak.
- Heavenly Village, which is full of shops, eateries and live music for guests to explore on their own.
Reno City Tour History on Tap ($70) – Aug. 19
This city tour will provide a bit of history on “The Biggest Little City in the World,” including a stop at the famous Reno Arch and some time in Wingfield Park along the Truckee River to view the “whispering giant” and beautiful rose gardens. You will get a taste of Reno’s growing craft beer scene at The Depot, a historical train station built to be the headquarters of the Nevada-California-Oregon Railway in 1910 and now beautifully restored into Nevada’s first combined brewery and distillery. The final stop is the National Automobile Museum, which has more than 200 vehicles – from the 1890s to the present day – on display.
Tour registration is open online. Attendees can also register on site at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center.
