On Aug. 28, Brett Walsh of Fuquay-Varina, N.C., received the American Legion Law Enforcement Officer of the Year Award at the 100th National Convention in Minneapolis. The award has been given through the Legion's National Security program since 1997.
Walsh has worked for the Fuquay-Varina Police Department since 2008, in the Patrol and Special Operations divisions. He serves as a trainer and instructor in several different areas. In 2016, he provided vital leadership experience in a domestic murder/suicide case that allowed him to protect his fellow officers.
Walsh is a Marine Corps veteran who served from 2000 to 2004, including a deployment as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003. He is active in his community, from Coffee With a Cop events to coaching youth sports.
"There are 1000s of first responders working everywhere right now, and they all deserve recognition for their hard work and sacrifice," Walsh said. "So thank you."
