Effort is continuation of America Legion Family community service projects during national convention.
A contingent of American Legion Family members and Greenwood Cemetery Community Partners, LLC, will join forces Aug. 28 to clean-up and rejuvenate grounds that had been neglected for many years.
The Greenwood Cemetery in Louisville is an historic African-American cemetery and the final resting place for more than 800 Black veterans. The cemetery had been previously cited by the city for tall grass, weeds and poor upkeep. Volunteers from the American Legion Family and Greenwood Cemetery Community Partners will cut grass, remove weeds, clean tombstones and perform other landscaping as a service project on August 28. The Legion Family members come from states across the nation and will be in Louisville to participate in the organization’s 107th National Convention. The cemetery project is expected to last several hours and will include about 65 volunteers.
