After Iowa Boys State was canceled, Montezuma American Legion Post 169 took the $500 it had set aside to sponsor two high school students in the program and donated it to a project created to battle the coronavirus pandemic. Michael DeJong was one of the students chosen by Post 169 to participate in Boys State; now he and his sister are creating face shields using a 3D printer and are donating them to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
Chanin Nuntavong was appointed the executive director of Government and Veteran Affairs in The American Legion’s Washington, D.C., office. He previously served as director of the National Veterans Affairs and Rehabilitation Division, and deputy director of Media Relations. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps after graduating high school, and retired as a gunnery sergeant with more than 22 years of service.
