1,284 – Number of hot meals distributed in a six-week period by members of George P. Vanderveer American Legion Post 129 in Toms River, N.J., to go along with 992 rolls of paper towels, 4,048 rolls of toilet paper, 295 crisis boxes, 1,000 oranges and hundreds of pounds of other fruits and vegetables. This assisted community members in need during the COVID-19 pandemic, in a joint effort with a local food pantry and another nonprofit, A Need We Feed.
Since the pandemic has altered normal, everyday life, American Legion posts worldwide have continued fulfilling the purposes of the four pillars to youth, veterans, military and patriotic communities.
Post have stepped into the crisis by feeding those in need; buying supplies for health-care providers and first responders; holding blood drives and donating blood; and actively checking on veterans.
The American Legion National Headquarters also has continued to fulfill its core mission by representing veterans in their VA appeals cases, providing Temporary Financial Assistance grants to military and veteran families with minor children at home and helping veterans find jobs.
In May, posts throughout the nation served food, collected money, gave blood and donated time to help others get through the pandemic.
