District commanders awarded for exceeding 100% membership

Five American Legion district commanders and their guests have earned a trip to the 2022 national convention in Milwaukee as a distinguished guest of the national commander where they will be honored for winning their respective categories in the Race to the Top competition.

Five American Legion district commanders and their guests have earned a trip to the 2022 national convention in Milwaukee as a distinguished guest of the national commander where they will be honored for winning their respective categories in the Race to the Top competition. The competition recognizes district commanders in five categories whose district membership on March 31 represents the greatest percentage (cannot be less than 100% to qualify) over the final previous year’s membership. 

The Race to the Top winners are:

- Category I (districts of 15-1,499 members) – Montana 1st District Commander Kenneth Simon (106.58%)

- Category II (districts of 1,500-2,999 members) – Massachusetts 9th District Commander John T. Bettencourt (106.06%)

- Category III (districts of 3,000-4,999 members) – Ohio 9th District Commander William Richard Dittebrand (104.65%)

- Category IV (districts of 5,000-7,499 members) – Ohio 3rd District Commander Betsy A. Law (103.13%)

- Category V (districts of 7,500 or more members) – Ohio 4th District Commander Steven N. Ervin (108.35%)

Second-place winners receive a $500 check. They are:

- Category I (districts of 15-1,499 members) – South Carolina 4th District Commander Wayne D. Southworth (105.33%)

- Category II (districts of 1,500-2,999 members) – Ohio 6th District Commander Gary W. Cox, Jr. (103.48%)

- Category III (districts of 3,000-4,999 members) – Ohio 13th District Commander Richard L. Wright (101.97%)

Third-place winners receive a $375 check. They are:

- Category I (districts of 15-1,499 members) – Alabama 13th District Commander Kenneth A. Chambers (103.88%)

- Category II (districts of 1,500-2,999 members) – Ohio 14th District Commander Robert C. Carson, Jr. (101.57%)
