When you meet someone, get their card and say you should do coffee.

This monthly feature explores ways in which Post 1 in Alaska has increased membership. 

 

A casual meeting over coffee is the first date of the business world. When you meet someone, get their card and say you should do coffee. Just like a first date, at coffee you’re trying to find out what’s important to them and if it’s a good connection. If possible, have the coffee date at the post (assuming your post can make a good cup of Joe). Walk them around the post to show them the history … and plans for the future.

As the cliché goes, if you can see it, you can achieve it, so let them see it. Perhaps offer them a free membership so you can keep in contact and prompt them to engage. 

Show them you’re investing in the post. It’s easy to get stuck fixing plumbing and boilers, but having a facelift is just as important. Check out your curb appeal. Would the average person be excited to come into your building?  Or does it look worn and run down?

Pull those weeds, plant some flowers, and put a fresh coat of paint up. Don’t have a ton of money for expensive renovations? At least talk about your plans for the future and how a business partner can help. Perhaps ask if they could sponsor a fundraising dinner so you can raise money to fix something.

And don’t be afraid to ask for advice. The business partner you are courting may know someone who could consult for you about the best way to fix your problem. Post 1 has done this for numerous projects, such as upgrading our internet infrastructure and renovating one of our rooms.
